Katherine Pierce couldn't help feeling uncomfortable.

Here she was with her daughter, the two being reunited at last, after more than five hundred years. She thought Nadia might want to talk to her about the years gone by. Instead, Nadia said nothing.

"So, tell me about you," said Katherine.

"What do you want to know?" Nadia asked without sounding like she cared.

"I don't know. Just things about you. What are your favorite things? Favorite places? Any grand romances?"

Nadia seemed to perk up a little at the mention of romances.

"See?" said Katherine. "I knew there had to be something. So, tell me. Have you ever had any romance in your life?"

Nadia didn't answer. In fact, it was a full four minutes before she actually said anything, and by then Katherine had given up.

"There was someone once," she said, giving her mother a bit of a shock. "But we were never in a romance. We came close, but not quite."

"Really?" Katherine leaned forward. "Who was he?"

Nadia gave a dry chuckle, and looked slightly amused.

"It's a long tale," she said. "But if you really want to know, I'll tell you all about her."
