"I'm a firm believer in the idea that God shows you who you are through the people he places in your life."

I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the eerie stillness in the room. Two of the people closest to me were laid together across from where I was sitting. I felt like I had destroyed the bond the two once had due to me dragging them into my problems. Although I never asked, they still had my back and that meant the world to me.

Laughing sounded throughout the room, startling me. I forgot Shawn was still next to me due to the fact he hadn't moved or spoken in several hours. "What's funny?" I questioned, my voice straining to get the words out.

"I feel like I'm 'da only one lost here." He replied, tilting his head in my direction.

"What you mean?"

"Everyone knows who dude ass is, why y'all here, allat'. I don't. I've just been here waitin' to die."

Immediately my mind began to race with various things I had done in my short 18 years of living. All of the families I hurt, the people I let down, and the mistakes I made all came back to me at once.

"You remember my dad's fiance, Elena?" I asked, preparing myself to tell the story. I watched him proceed to nod his head, signaling he obviously knew who I was talking about.

"She used to..." I took a deep breath, slowly reminiscing on the past. "touch me. Used to make me do shit I wasn't into, you know? At the time I was like 14 when it started, so you know a lil' nigga was feelin' like the man because I got to fuck with this older woman, right?"

"This the girl you used to talk about when you told me you lost your virginity?" He questioned with a look on his face that I couldn't read. I just nodded my head in response, continuing with my story.

"My hate ran so deep for my father because he got to share a piece of her too. So when he proposed to her and she said yes, that set me off. She had my naive ass sprung, had me thinkin' we was gonna get married and shit like that. There were times when I would sit in my room coming up with ways we could be together. So I got her pregnant, thinking she had no choice but to be with my underage ass now." I shook my head at myself, lightly chuckling at how stupid I sounded.

"What happened to the baby?" Shawn asked with curiosity in his voice.

"She told me I was a mistake, and she was going to abort the baby so my father wouldn't find out. The day she told me that something in me just snapped...." I paused for a moment, breathing in deeply, "I killed her."

My last statement was the last thing said for a few minutes, before Shawn finally broke the silence with multiple questions.

"Nigga, how did you get away with that?" He said, raising his voice.

"Angelo and Korrie helped me get rid of her body. Nobody questioned us, and my dad never opened a case to find out what happened." I responded.

"He never wanted to know what happened to her?"

"Part of me feels like he knows I had something to do with it and didn't want to speak on it."

"So what does that have to do with this current situation?"

"Three months after Elena's funeral someone put pictures in my locker of us burning her body. Even had pictures of them following us to the gas station. Sometimes they'd be in my mailbox, and other times they'd be in my car. The pictures stopped after about a month, and then the tasks started."

"Tasks?"

"Yeah, I'd get sealed envelopes with tasks I had to complete and they escalated over time. First it started off as small errands, some shit you'd do for your parents when they didn't want to. Then they started asking me to do illegal things, and that worked its way up to Nova. I don't know what she means to them, but she's important."

"And you just did them, no questions asked?"

"These people have been playing with my life for the past two years. I almost died because I didn't do what they wanted on time, so yeah I ain't ask questions. I just hope they finally got what they wanted."

After that conversation it was back to the usual silence. It was almost comforting now. That night, the door opened and there was no one on the other side. Complete silence with a matching dark hallway. I decided to be the one to check if it was safe, and I never came back.
