Chapter two

Darcy

Lizzy and I were out grocery shopping, and once we returned, I realized I had not brought the house key with me. Shit. "Well?" my blonde friend urged me for an answer. I was furiously searching through my bag for the house key, when I gave up deferated. I shook my head. "Call the landlord." I sighed, looking at her phone to prompt her to make the call. "Why don't you call? It's your fault," she accused, her eyebrows furrowed.

"I didn't bring my phone," I whimpered. "Of course you didn't," she said sarcastically.

When Lizzy had finally made the call after arguing with me about it for what seemed like a good portion of the last half hour, we waited around for an equal amount of time for the landlord to arrive and let us into the building. "I'm going to be late for my art class," I muttered morosely. "Well, you shouldn't have locked us out." She crossed her arms.

"Well, it was obviously an accident," I was a little offended by her accusations that this was anything other than an accident. Her moods were really starting to get to me. Sometimes I would tell myself that she was bipolar. I would never admit that to her though.

I tapped my pen on the table of my art class room. I couldn't help but admire my fellow classmates. Their passions for alike, yet they all had a different take on things and different styles on the canvas. I couldn't help but get inspired and a little intimidated by them every class. My teacher's voice blurred into the background as I took in my surroundings. The smell of the old wood and dusky roof added to the lovely combination of the summer breeze that was blowing through the 1950's-style windows of the historical studio. My daydreaming was brought to a sudden halt as my name was called. "Darcy, what do you think about what we just read?" my teacher asked mock interest spread across his face. He obviously knew I wasn't listening.

"Uh, I think it was great. The author really reflected on the meaning of art piece," I murmured, hoping I could get away with that answer.

"Nice try, but the author was talking about impressionism. We will pick this up next time."

He slammed the book shut and the bustle of people began. Everyone was heading toward the door at once and pushed past me in their hurry to get out. I picked up my books, shuffled them into a pile, and cradled them in my arms. I headed outside into the sunshine, closing my eyes and taking in the fresh air. I walked outside, admiring the flowers in bloom as the birds chirped eagerly. As I walked down the driveway of the studio, the local shopping village came into view. I thought about heading over there to get a coffee before I ventured home but decided on the rose bushes and memorial ground ahead of me, which presented a lovely patch of grass to sit for a moment.

Moments later a butt plopped down next to me. "Milly," I acknowledged with a smile. "You know you made a great impression there." She chuckled. "Well, he shouldn't have a class in such interesting architecture if he doesn't want his students to get distracted." I pushed her playful with my shoulder. "True." She smiled, "How are things at home, you know with Lizzy?" She continued and I sighed. "Things are okay. The moods are getting to be a bit much." I looked at the ground, picking at a piece of grass. "Why don't you just make her move out?" She exclaimed. "It really hurts me to see you suffer like this. You're a young girl with a life to live and that pothead is holding you back."

"She's really not that bad." the grass picking got faster. "Darcy." Be real with yourself." She was glaring at me now with serious brown eyes. "Look, she is getting better. She's trying to get off the weed and I'm encouraging her. Besides, I won't be missing out on living. I am going to Greece with my father soon. I will live it up there!" I beamed at the last part, remembering my holiday, and then quickly, that happiness was overshadowed with guilt about leaving Lizzy behind.
