Chapter Three

Lizzy

Yesterday was a disaster. I was over an hour late for work and my performance was slipping. Sadly for me, Kerry had noticed. I had to pick up my game if I wanted to keep my job, and now I needed it more than ever. Today I would do better. I would start with clearing the debts in my life. A clear mind equals a clear life. Speaking of which, I finally had enough money to pay Sam back for the weed he had given me, and I wasn't wasting any time, or risking any future altercations with him. I threw a hooded jumper over my black top, leaving yesterday's ripped jeans on. First stop of the day was Sam's place.

"Sam." I knocked on his glass sliding door, I could see him sitting on the couch watching sports, through it. I reached into my back pocket and pulled out the money as he came to the door. "Anytime you want a hit, just let me know," he said as he took the money from my hand. "No thanks, I'm done with that." I meant every word of it. "For now." He snickered. "Catch you round, Lizzy," he said with a smile, closing the door in my face and retreating back to his spot on the couch.

It was my day off and I had nothing to do so of course I went into work. Once I had reached the cafe, I searched the menu, knowing full well that I knew every item on it. Ah, first coffee of the day, "Caramel latte, please," I said as I took out my debit card. "No problem, Lizzy. It will be ready shortly," Aaron said, waving away my card. "Employees don't pay." "But Kerry," I said, knowing I already wasn't on her good side, and if I didn't pay... "Who cares? If she says anything, it will just come out of my paycheck," he offered, and I smiled at his kind gesture. He looked at me with optimism. "Hey, are you able to work at two?" "Yeah, it shouldn't be a problem. I have everything I need here," I said, glad to get the work. I looked at my watch. Since it was already twelve, I figured I could hang out until my shift started and talk to Aaron through his.

Turning around, I scanned the room to find a seat and to my surprise, I spotted Katie.

"Lizzy!" she said, a grin spreading across her face. Before I had a chance to gather myself, her arms were around my neck. Out of instinct, I wrapped my arms around her waist. "Listen," I started to say, but her hazel eyes looked up at me through long lashes and I felt my knees get weak, "The other day was embarrassing. I'm sorry you had to come with me to the doctor's." Her scent filled my nose as I took a deep breath.

"You already apologized." She looked at me blankly. "Besides, I wanted to come, remember?" Her blank stare turned into a smile. "Yes, but over text. I wanted to apologize in person," I expressed.

She laughed at my response and her smile just made me melt. "I was hoping I would see you here. What are you up to today?" "I actually have to work in two hours," I said, looking down at my phone for an update on the time. "What are you doing after work?" she pressed. "Nothing," I stated, feeling slightly embarrassed by my lack of plans.

"Would you like to go for a walk?" she asked eagerly. "Where did you have in mind?" I enquired, knowing that no matter where it was, I would be there.

"I was thinking we could walk near my place. There are some really nice trails. And then maybe we could go and get a bite to eat."

As the words left her mouth I was hooked. "It's a date," I said, instantly regretting the words as they came out of my mouth. I did not date. I hooked up with people from time to time, but dating was just not something I ever did.

"What time do you finish?" She interrupted my thoughts. "I should be done around six," I replied, looking at Aaron for confirmation. He nodded, not so subtly eavesdropping on our conversation. "Okay, I'll meet you here then." Katie flashed me another one of her brilliant smiles as she got up to get her coffee order. Once she had it, she turned to me and saluted as she left.
