Veronica woke to the sound of Aaron moving through his morning routine. The buzz from his electric razor brushing through his chin stubble, the clink of his toothbrush falling into their porcelain cup on their bathroom vanity. It was Saturday morning, but he had a business meeting to fly to in the Philippines. In a few minutes, he would be out the door with his vlogging camera and suitcase.
"I'll see you in a few days, okay? Don't miss me too much," Aaron said, pulling his hoodie and flinging it over his arm. "I'll get you some filipino snacks on the way back."
Roni yawned and stretched her arms out of bed. "I'll miss you. Stay safe. I love you."
Aaron kissed her forehead, then walked out to catch his Uber.
I wish you were cruel, Aaron, she thought. I wish you were careless or selfish or so much more lazier. Anything but kind.
Veronica looked up at their bedroom window and wondered what the neighbor's kids had seen last summer. Was it Ethan's hand over hers, a kiss, or worse?
