I exhaled a few times before ringing the doorbell. His hand tensed in mine. I had told him not to be worried, but if I was honest, I was nervous, too.
My parents had invited Niall and I over for dinner. For the first time.
The door slid open, revealing my smiling, slim, perfect-looking parents. How did they look so good?
"Sofia!" They smiled in unison, like it was a surprise that I was coming. I smelled the food from on the porch as I embraced them both.
"And you must be Mr. Horan!" my dad exclaimed with fake excitement, shaking his hand. I saw the look of judgment in his eyes and glared.
"It's just Niall, sir," Niall said humbly. I smiled at him.
"Mr. Horan." I wanted to face-palm into an alligator pit. "My daughter says you've been dating for six months, and that she likes you a lot," he relayed. I felt Niall's hand tighten in mine once more as we stepped into the house.
"That's right, sir," he smiled.
"Well, c'mon in and have a seat," my mom said, seeming much more welcoming. I led Niall to the table, sitting him down next to me and across from my parents.
After we got our food, the endless questions began.
"So, what are you doing right now?" my dad asked. I saw Niall look up from his food.
"Right now, I'm attending University. It's my last year. I have a part time job at the repair shop on Clifton Avenue," he said proudly. I continued to eat, knowing I was going to be silent for the entire night.
"How much income weekly?"
"Dad," I hissed. My mom shot him a look, too.
"What do you want to be, son?" he continued.
"I'm going into mechanical engineering, gonna earn my degree, but most importantly, Sofia's husband," he answered. I felt my heart flutter.
"That will be up to me, I think," my dad almost growled. I dropped my fork, but his glare didn't falter.
"John. I think that's quite enough," my mom hissed. He looked down at his food, and we were quiet the rest of the meal.
Niall and I washed the dishes while they sat outside on the back patio.
"I'm sorry. He can be-" Niall chuckled.
"He only wants the best for you, and I respect that." I stopped to look at him.
"Don't do that," I sighed. He furrowed his eyebrows, staring at me.
"What? Scrub the silverware?" he asked. I smiled lightly.
"No. Don't be so mature," I clarified. He bumped his hip with mine.
"I'm not, but they should think I am," he sighed, drying his final plate and then his hands.
I sighed with him.
"I wouldn't stay away from you no matter what they said," I internally promised, clenching my jaw.
"Hey. Let's go out there. They're waiting," he smiled, trying to get me cheered up.
"Okay," I agreed, walking through the screen door. The sun was setting over the ocean, and I smiled against the warm air.
"Hey," I smiled to my parents.
"Let's go on a walk by the shore," my mom suggested. Niall took my hand as we walked just a few minutes to be down by the ocean.
I skimmed my hand along some driftwood in the sand, quickly regretting it. I felt a stab in my palm and looked to see a splinter.
I let out a wail of pain, holding it up to the disappearing light.
"What's wrong?" Niall asked, rushing to my side. I explained, and he examined my hand.
"I told you not to touch those kinds of things," my dad scolded, standing a few feet behind Niall. I watched Niall stick out his tongue at him, knowing he wouldn't see. I giggled, but then shrieked.
"I'm sorry," he rushed. "I got it." I sighed in relief, smiling when he pressed a chaste kiss to my lips and brought me in for a hug. My dad's eyes were locked on us, but I just looked away.
"It's getting quite late," my mom interjected. I let go of Niall, and we walked back to the house.
"Thank you for having me over, sir," Niall nodded as we said goodbye. "Ma'am," he smiled at my mom. She smiled right back.
Niall went and started the car while my parents had a word with me.
"I think he's a wonderful boy," my mom said, rubbing my shoulder. She ran to pick up the ringing phone, leaving my enemy of night and I to be alone.
"Dad. You could have been nicer," I frowned, folding my arms across my chest. I expected him to yell, but he only sighed.
"I know, but he needs to be the right one for you, Sofia," he spoke. I nodded.
"And I know he is," I countered. "But do you?" I wondered, needing an answer.
"Well," he sighed, scratching his chin. "His handshake could have been firmer. He forgot a few table manners. He forgot to pull out your chair at dinner-"
"This isn't Buckingham Palace, this is important!" I kind of yelled. He looked guilty, but I didn't regret it.
"I'm sorry," he frowned, shaking his head.
"His smile was bright, especially when he looked at you. That's good. He sure knows how to take care of you, which is most important." My heart was finally beating once more.
"And he called me sir. I like that," he smirked. I beamed at him, crushing him into a hug.
"I love you, Dad," I sighed. He gave me a hearty laugh.
"I didn't say I liked him," he pointed out. I pulled away. He tried to hide his smile, but I saw right through his facade.
"I will consider him part of the family."
