When Eric walks into History for period one, he takes his normal seat and looks up at the board. His breath hitches for a moment as he takes in the fact that Gerald's name is just below his on the board. He and Gerald are next to each other on the register, but that never really impacted him. But now, everyone is the class has their name written in faded black ink, and 'Eric Birling & Gerald Croft' also glares at him. He sits in his normal seat, and his history teacher gestures for him to stand back up again. He does so with a scowl, and then he's being told to take his leather jacket off and wear his blazer, and to stop defiling the school uniform. He's just about to take off his jacket when Gerald walks in, his friends next to him. Time seems to slow for Eric, as he watches his friends point to the board, and laughing. Gerald turns and takes it in for himself, and then he looks at Eric. He notices how blue Gerald's eyes are, and suddenly Gerald's lips contort into a gentle smile, and Eric finds himself smiling back, and his heart aches.
