Yume sat next to Koharu, her best friend, under their favorite spot on the orphanage playground. The huge octopus slide, the wonderful red one that had four different slides on it. Koharu drew in her tiny notepad with her tiny pencil, she had drawn so much by now the pencil was only one inch tall.
"What are you drawing?" Yume asked
"The play ground," Koharu answered "See? It's the slide,"
"That looks just like it!" Yume gasped "Is that us?"
"They will be,"
"So cool,"
The two were so enthralled by the drawing, they didn't notice a nice young lady come over. "Hello," she said
They looked up. "Hello," they said in unison
"My name is Hotaru, what are your names?" she asked
"I'm Yume, this is Koharu," said Yume
"It's nice to meet you. That's a very nice drawing, Koharu,"
"Thank you," Koharu said shyly
"Yume, do you draw?" Hotaru asked
"I don't have time," said Yume "Subaru told me that once you turn thirteen no one ever adopts you. I'm thirteen, he's fifteen, we're doomed for eternal loneliness. So now we're preparing to become street urchins and steal stuff,"
"Oh my. Steal you say?"
"OH! Don't worry, I won't steal from you," Yume assured her "We've been practicing on the playground. I can show you!" Yume jumped up and started climbing up one of the slides, instead of using the ladder in the center to go up. She walked to over to the troop of the ladder and began climbing that backwards with her legs supporting her and her arms waving in the air. She landed with an almost perfect hand stand. "Ouch,"
"Are you okay?" Koharu asked
"I'm fine!" Yume assured her "But my wrist hurts a bit,"
"But you're fine?" Yume nodded "Good. And ... who's Subaru?"
"That's him over there," Yume pointed to a boy swinging recklessly on the swings, getting in the way of the younger children. "He's teaching a few kids how to survive, I'm one of them, protect you're wallets now,"
"Yume!" said Koharu
"No, it's fine," Hotaru assured them "Do you mind if I talk to him for a while,"
"Sure," The girls said together
Hotaru left and the girls turned to each other. "Do you think she's going to adopt someone?" Koharu asked
"Maybe," said Yume "Do you think she'll adopt us?"
"I hope so. Oh, but what if she only wants to adopt one of us?" Koharu turned pail at the thought.
"No! That won't happen! I told you, if anyone tried to adopt just you or just me, I'll tell them 'Sorry, but we;re a packaged deal!'"
The girls giggled. "But someone will adopt us both, right?"
"Koharu, we arrived at the same day and we'll leave on the same day," Yume assured her "Cause I'm not going anywhere without you!" Koharu smiled and hugged, Yume started to sing. "Maybe far away, or maybe real nearby. He maybe pouring her coffee, she may be straightening his tie! Come on, you know this song!"
"But you're a much better singer," said Koharu
"No, you're just as good as a singer as I am. Come on, Maybe in a house all hidden by a hill! "
"She's sitting playing piano, he's sitting paying a bill! " Koharu sang
Yume still remembered it like it was yesterday, even though she was just a little five year old girl. Her parents died in a car crash leaving her alone with no relatives and she was sent to the orphanage like a soldier off to war, with no knowing when she'd return to home. And with her was Koharu, the poor girl's parents didn't want her.
It was awful, Yume waited in a office by herself, waiting. She could hear the screams from across the hall, Mrs. Nanakura screaming "I can't take care of this little brat anymore!! I am begging you, get her away from me!!" Koharu had run over to the office, hiding.
"Hello," said Yume, Koharu gasped.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone was here -" she stuttered
"Please don't go!" Yume said "Please ... I don't like being alone,"
And they were never separated since, if one was walking the other would be there. They swore they'd be adopted together no matter what, it was the promise they had made together. "We'll friends forever!" said Yume
"Forever and ever and ever!" said Koharu
It was hard to watch other boys and girls get adopted while they were forgotten. They weren't the only ones though, Subaru liked to brag about how "I've been here since I was a baby, so shut up and stop complaining!" And they never complained.
He was exceptionally open, while others were either abandoned as babies or just didn't want to talk about it. There was only one other exception, Asahi Kasumi, who had amnesia and couldn't remember anything other then his name. But no one came looking for him.
But no matter how many people came, Yume couldn't help but get excited thinking "This is the day!" but another part of her saying "Yume ... you're an idiot,"
