Promise

"Naoto ... psst ... Naoto!" said Asahi as he whispered from the border of his room and the hall. "Can we talk with you ... in private?"

Naoto turned to the boy, "Okay, do you mind dirt?" Naoto had just come back from gardening and still had dirt on his pants and gloves.

"No," he said "Now please come in quickly, we have to tell you something in privet!"

"Whatever," Naoto sighed as he walked into Asahi's room. Yume, Subaru, and Ako were sitting on Asahi's bed. Asahi closed the door. "What's this about?"

"Can you keep a secret?" Yume asked "Further more, can you keep a promise?" Yume almost got choked up again.

"If it won't mean any of you getting hurt," said Naoto

"Aw, you care," said Subaru

"It's my job," Naoto said without a hint of sarcasm

"But you promise right?" Ako asked "You need to swear that we're about to tell you will not leave this room!"

Naoto did a slight eye-roll but nodded "I promise," he said "As long as it means you won't get harmed if my lips are sealed,"

"Thank you. We won't," said Yume "Remember when I told you that we didn't find anything while investigating?"

"Are you going to tell me the truth?" Naoto asked

Yume felt like something had fallen on her head. "You ... you knew?!"

"I know when people are lying," Naoto told them

"Oh," Yume sighed "Well, ti doesn't matter. We're telling you now. What we found ... was this. You can come out now!"

There was a sudden THUMP and Naoto jumped, not from surprise but was literally raised into the air. "OUCH!!" Naoto stepped off the square that he had been formally standing on. It was moved aside and Kanata rose from the ground rubbing his head. "You guys didn't tell me he was standing there,"

"Well we didn't know that there was ... there!" said Subaru

"Um, Naoto," said Ako "This is Kanata. He lives in the walls of this mansion and 'borrows' food and other necessities from us like books!"

"I see ..." Naoto watched as Kanata emerged from the walls, he was wearing his goggles again and was covered in dust. "How long have you been living here?"

"I dunno, eight, nine, ten years, I lost track," Kanata said with a shrug "Look, these guys don't like how I'm 'borrowing' stuff from you guys without permission and thought that you would be able to help us create a way so I don't have to do that anymore,"

"We were thinking that you could get extra food for him," said Asahi "Just enough for him to live on,"

Naoto turned to Kanata "Please don't tell Hikaru and Hotaru I'm here," he said "I can't go back,"

Back where?  Yume thought, but kept silent as they waited for Naoto's answer.

"Okay, I won't tell," he said "If you don't steal anymore,"

Kanata smiled "Thank you," he said

"So how do we get extra groceries from here to there?" Yume asked

"Well there's a tunnel to my room isn't there?" Naoto asked

"Of course! There are tunnels that go everywhere," said Kanata

"Then just show me where to put the groceries,"

"Sure, follow me," Kanata jumped back down the hole and into the tunnel. "Come on!"

Kanata was just as quick and speedy as before, but Naoto didn't seem to have trouble keeping up with him. After many twist and turns and questions on how Kanata could keep track of them all, they finally reached another secret entrance from the floor which led to Naoto's room. A rather plain looking room, but it was a room and nice all the same.

The entrance was under a spiral rug Naoto had placed there. "Perfect," said Subaru "Then it's easy to remember,"

"So you won't tell anyone about this?" Ako asked

"So long as Kanata keeps his end of the deal," said Naoto "So no stealing,"

"I won't, I won't," said Kanata "I swear!"
