there

the next day i saw you walking up to the entrance of the school. i noticed you were walking with a slight limp and i jogged until i reached you.

"hey." i said, slightly breathless. you turned to look at me immediately, a dazzling smile on your face. my heart skipped a beat.

"hi." you answered, moving hair out of your face. we reached the door and i opened it for you, you smiled at me as you walked in. i followed closely behind you. perhaps i was afraid you would disappear.

we parted ways to go to our classes and my heart felt heavy. i had only begun talking to you yesterday but you already brightened my day. i didn't want to talk to anyone except you.

unfortunately, you also made me forget my initial intentions. i had not asked you about your bruises, nor did i pay attention to see if there were any more.

maybe, if i had, i would have noticed the sadness in your eyes. maybe i would have noticed the bruises barely covered by your concealer. maybe i would have noticed the pain you were suffering from.

i should have been there for you.
