the pretender

nobody believes her frown
that's stretched so forcefully across her lips
because she's always seen with a smile

so she decided to never be seen as sad
because she's tired of not being believed

she'll just pretend instead,
and she's gotten rather good at it

it frightens her how she can sweep
her emotions under the rug
of fake smiles and twinkling eyes
and halfhearted laughs

all she wants is to cry
and be loved
and feel worthy
but she doesn't feel anything anymore

she doesn't want to pretend anymore
she doesn't want to pretend anymore
she doesn't want to pretend anymore

please, somebody believe her
