The past three days were a whirlwind for Athena. She was forced to pack everything she thought would be necessary for her move to California in that short period. Her friend Mia came to join her for the task.
Mia and Athena had been friends since they were kids, Mia's father being Athena's father's business partner. Mia is the only friend Athena has that didn't look or treat or any different after her dad died, she's been a constant in Athena's life when everything was changing. And now Athena had to leave her.
Mia and Athena were opposites in many ways. Athena was the sarcastic and social awkward one. Mia was always energetically confident and although not purposefully always found ways to break the rules. Mia was strikingly beautiful with her long brunette hair and a tall athletic body, a natural born sprinter. Athena was a tiny 5'5 redhead with a petite but strong frame due to all of her running. Athena's pale skin always stood in contrast to Mia's olive skin tone.
Yet, they shared many things in common. They both had a deep love for the Met, were avid runners, and could spend hours together watching romcoms.
When Athena broke the news to Mia that she was leaving the girl handled the news in her usual manner, dramatically.
"What do you mean you're moving to California," Mia exclaimed perched on Athena's bed the day after her mother had told her the news.
Athena was walking around the room putting necessary items into a box. Her mother was going to ship the few boxes Athena packed up to be at her sister's house when she arrived. Other essentials Athena would take in a suitcase on her flight.
Athena stopped what she was doing to look at her best friend, "I mean my mom sat me down yesterday and told me that I am going to spend the next few months living with my sister while she's away for work." Athena sounded defeated but in typical fashion, she wasn't going to fight her mother's decision.
Mia bounced onto her knees on the bed throwing her hands up, "And of course you being you, you just agreed to do this," she questioned the redhead who was now nicely folding clothes into a suitcase.
Athena looked up at her best friend, "Mia, you know my mom. Her word is final and there was no point in fighting it."
Mia now stood up distraught and hovered over Athena, "No need to fight your mother separating you from your best friend who will be absolutely lost without you here for her senior year!?," she whisper-shouted not wanting Blair to hear her.
Athena looked sadly at her best friend. It was true they had spent their whole lives together and now she was being shipped across the country to live with her estranged sister.
She stood up from the floor tossing a shirt into the suitcase and sitting back against the headrest of her bed, letting out a heavy sigh as she did so. Mia took her usual place next to her on the right. This was where they had spent years watching movies, having sleepovers, and talking about their future.
Athena turned towards Mia, "It's not going to be that bad Mia, I just have to keep telling myself that."
Mia shook her head at her best friend tears gathering in the corners of her eyes, "You know you don't always have to be so strong and compliant Athena."
Athena laughed dryly, "Ah, but you see that's my superpower.".
They two laughed and leaned into each other arms wrapped around each other. They sat like that for a little bit before Mia jumped up from the bed.
"Okay if we're going to accept this terrible fate," Mia stated dramatically, "then we are going to spend one of your last nights here with one of our best movie nights ever."
