"Wow Ms. Galang, super rookie of the women's volleyball team last season! Looks like I'll be having two superstars in my class this term. Go ahead hija, take the seat beside Mr. Teng. Mukha namang magkakasundo kayo. Please wake him up as well, our class is about to start."

After the heart-warming but equally humiliating speech of her prof, she kept her head down. It wasn't that she didn't appreciate what her prof said; it just overwhelmed her. Her classmates were cheering her on and wishing her and the whole team luck in their road to the 3-peat. She just politely smiled to them as a sign of her gratitude. She shyly walked towards the empty seat beside Mr. Teng, the King Archer. She wasn't living under a rock, and she knew that she was going to be sitting beside someone really famous nof only in school but in the whole country. Even though the Green Archers had very capable veterans, he was the one who led the team to their 4th place finish. He was part of the Mythical 5 and was the Rookie of the Year - things that she also accomplished in her rookie year. She was the Best Server and Rookie of the Year.

She was just a step in front of the table they'd be sharing when she started eyeing him curiously. He was slumped on the table with his notebooks and pens scattered around him. The venti sized cup of coffee in front of him hinted that he had little to zero hours of sleep. And judging by the pile of papers stacked on the chair she was supposed to sit on, the King Archer was also the king of crammers. She was hesitant but decided to tap him on his shoulder to wake him up. He groggily lifted up his head and his eyes proved even more what she already figured out. His eyes were bloodshot and his eye bags were bigger than his chinky eyes.

"Um, sorry for waking you up. Diyan kasi ako pinaupo ni Sir Isidro." she said as it was his turn to eye her. She immediately averted her gaze.

He started packing his things and mumbled apologies while doing so, "Sorry, I was reviewing for a make-up exam and cramming a report kasi. Sorry talaga."

She just gave him a slight smile and a light nod. She occupied the seat he cleared, took out her filler and black G-tec for taking down notes, and tried to make herself comfortable in yet another classroom. It was already 3 in the afternoon, her classes started at 7 and she hasn’t had a break since. It was their team’s off-season, and it was also the time they get more load and units. The class wouldn't be that boring if Carol was with her. They were taking the same course and mostly the same classes. Carol was her classmate in this class, but she had a check-up scheduled at that time.

In the middle of the teacher’s lecture about classroom guidelines, Ara felt the fatigue kicking in. It took all her will to keep her eyes open. She mentally cursed herself for forgetting to bring candies and snacks since most profs permitted them in class. She searched her bag desperately for anything that would keep her awake excluding her phone. She didn't want to be labelled as the girl who used her phone in class. Finding nothing, she gave up and just tried her hardest not to fall asleep.

snap, snap, snap, snap, snap

A weird sound caught her attention however. She looked at where the sound was coming from, and her eyes brought her to Jeron's left hand. Jeron was pulling and releasing a rubber band he was wearing, and it was creating a light snapping sound. In her head, she was wondering why he was doing it. She didn't realize she was staring at him until he started talking to her.

"Um, Ara. Sorry, is it bothering you?" he politely asked her.

She shook her head and smiled faintly at him, "Hindi. I was just wondering kung bakit."

He scratched the back of his head and gave her a sheepish, childish grin, "Ah, my brother taught me this nung grade school pa lang kami. Sabi niya, I should always bring a rubber band with me kasi I might need it daw. Never niyang sinabi bakit, hindi niya inexplain kung saan ko gagamitin. Pero one time, sobrang inaantok ako in class tapos super strict nung teacher namin. I was playing with the rubber band, yung gumagawa ako ng star, car ni Batman, yung mga ganun. Then biglang naputol yung rubber band sa kamay ko, sobrang sakit pero nagising ako. So ever since, I always had rubber bands with me."

Ara couldn't help but smile at Jeron's story. She didn't realize that the King Archer had little quirks that his fangirls would surely fawn over, "Ang cool naman, susubukan ko rin nga."

The bell that signaled the end of their class rang, and she quickly gathered her things. She couldn't be happier that she could finally eat and rest since they didn't have training that day.

She was about the head out of the classroom when someone tapped her shoulder. She turned around and a smiling Jeron offering a handshake, "I just realized na I didn't introduce myself properly. I'm Jeron Teng."

She took his hand and shook it firmly, "Ara, Ara Galang."

He bid her goodbye and left her there with 3 rubber bands in her hand.
