Olivia is also from the One Direction album Made in the A.M. released in the November after Zayn left the band.
It was written by Harry, along with Julian Bunetta and John Ryan. It is about longing for someone (or something) you love and saying that you don't want them to leave.
Apologies if you love this song. I don't and I'm not going to spend long analysing it because although I think it is about Zayn, it is fairly simple lyrically.
Harry has said that it isn't necessarily about a female. It seems pretty obvious that Olivia = Zayn.
I live for you I long for you
Olivia
The next line is pure Zarry - another reference to Zayn's eyes
I've been idolising the light in your eyes
Olivia
The first verse also sounds like Harry is singing about Zayn: remember I said I believed Zayn had wanted more from Harry than H was prepared to give:
Remember the day we were giving up
When you told me I didn't give you enough (Olivia)
Compare this to Zayn's lyrics in Entertainer:
I knew it right away when you stopped lovin' me
It happened when your touch wasn't enough for me
(Sorry I was just scarred for a moment by reading Entertainer lyrics and I'm taking a moment to appreciate the nuanced brilliance of Zayn's work. His lyrics are searing. Compared to the nursery-rhyme-like Olivia. Yep, Harry is a great entertainer and performer (even a great songwriter) but Zayn is an artist - original, authentic, unique. Apologies Harry fans. But I digress!!) (2020 addendum: Harry reaches Zayn's level of artistry on Fine Line, IMO)
And breaking news - Zayn's new Zarry-heavy song Too Much released TODAY (thank you @eos-hyp for alerting me to this!) contains the lyrics
I guess I want too much...
You just can't love enough
That's why I need a touch
Wow, that's a lot of repetition of one theme: Harry not giving Zayn enough. Enough what?
What do you think Zayn wanted more of?
Continuing with the lyrics to Olivia:
She's lying in bed with my t-shirt on
Just thinking how I went about it wrong
This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love
Harry's lover ("Olivia") is lying in bed with his t-shirt on. The image repeats in Harry's solo song From the Dining Table, suggesting that Olivia and FTDT are about the same person:
I see you gave him my old t-shirt
More of what was once mine (FTDT)
And we know who FTDT is about because Zayn confirmed it in Dusk Till Dawn...
Let's look at the rest of the Olivia lyrics: they are very emotional, with the narrator longing for a lover who is leaving / absent:
Say what you're feeling and say it now
'Cause I got the feeling you're walking out
And time is irrelevant when I've not been seeing you
The consequences of falling out
Are something I'm having nightmares about
And these are the reasons I'm crying out to be with you
Please believe me, don't you see
The things you mean to me?
Oh I love you, I love you
I love, I love, I love Olivia
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia
I've been idolizing the light in your eyes, Olivia
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia
Don't let me go
Don't let me go
When you go and I'm alone
You live in my imagination
The summertime and butterflies
All belong to your creation
I love you, that's all I do
I love you
Harry sings most of the song. To me, the whole song (and especially the bridge) is so over-the-top romantic, melancholy and fantastical as to sound fake. I said something similar in my chapter on If I Could Fly. And I'm not ashamed to say it because I know that Zayn feels the same way as me about the songs Harry wrote for Made in the A.M.
How do I know? Because Zayn calls Harry out on it in his song, rEaRvIeW. I'll save the seriously shady details of that song for a later chapter.
