Chapter 57 - ????

"God, Zane is stupid. I can't believe he went and got himself killed over that stupid deaf girl of his that he kidnapped, especially when he knew her mate was Alpha Hays." I start, pausing slightly. 

The guilt has started clawing at my insides, knowing he's dead all because of a tiny choice I made. Part of me thinks he deserved it, but at the end of the day, he was the only family I had left so I was willing to turn a blind eye, to help him, even if I didn't agree with it. If only people knew what really happened. Hell, if they did, I would have been dead a long time ago.

"Thank god I wasn't caught up in that whole thing in the end and it's a good thing I know my shit otherwise I wouldn't have left in time and I would be dead too. If only Zane had listened to me." 

I watch as James rolls his eyes and I smile at him, the sensation feeling entirely fake. No one can know, even if it kills me someday.

"Stupid mutt. You know he got what he deserved," he smirks, clearly amused by it all. 

"I know. It was always Acacia this or Acacia that. I'm not even sure if he knew I wanted Claire. Hell, I'm not even sure he knew she has a younger sister." I continue after a moment. 

"Oh well, I guess that's karma but at least it means that now I can get what I want. Plus, it will be so much easier now that they all think that everyone from Zane's pack is dead, they won't suspect a thing. I can get Claire and no one can stop me." 

"Not like your stupid brother" James adds grinning. I cringe slightly on the inside at James's choice of words. Yes, Zane was an awful person most of the time, but he also had a tiny bit of good deep down in him. He saved my life, I owe him that.

"God, he's not even my real brother. He's my stepbrother. I'm not anything like him and I don't wish to be anything like him" I reply groaning. 

"I see. So how exactly did he die, anyway?" James asks curiously. 

"Well from what I saw, Grayson had Acacia and then Zane came after them" I start, recounting the scene. "Zane charged and both he and Grayson shifted and fought for a bit. It didn't take long for Grayson to kill him, Zane wasn't exactly the fittest or strongest of men." 

"Shit" James replies smirking. 

"Yeah. So now that that's all happened, hopefully, we shouldn't have to run into Alpha Hays at all" I reply smiling, knowing full well that that will not be the last time I will be seeing Grayson.

"Good cause I don't want to end up dead like Zane." 

"Anyways, I haven't seen you in ages. How've you been, man?" I ask James curiously. 

"I've been alright. Found myself a mate and they let me join their pack" he says grinning. 

"No?! You've left the dark side" I gasp, fake surprised. 

"Yeah. You know I hated being a rogue so when they offered for me to join them, of course, I said yes. Plus I'd do anything for my mate. You know you could do the same with Claire?" 

"I know and I want to but I don't think they'd want me once they know I'm Zane's stepbrother. Plus, I don't even know if she's my mate yet. She's only fifteen and it's only a feeling I have that she is my mate." 

"Why not just wait for her to turn sixteen?" 

"Because I want her now!" I whine annoyed. 

"Whatever dude. You're nineteen now and we both know you're not a terrible guy, unlike your brother, but you'll be upsetting a lot of people if you do it this way." 

"I don't give a fuck. I want her now" I growl lowly. 

"Fine. Don't say I didn't warn you. You'll be just like Zane if you do it like this, just like the person you say that you are not anything like." James replies sighing. I roll my eyes as James stands up and heads for the door.
