A File Extension is an identifier, that lets a computer, or program, know what type of file a file actually is. Here is am example of a File Extension, with a Gif format file:

Moving_Image.gif

A File Extension is the "." at the end of a file's name, and anything that comes after the dot. Changing the File Extension can change the file type, which is very useful. For example, if you want to have just the Audio of a Video file, and that Video file is a .mp4 format, you can rename the File Extension to .mp3. This could allow for things like downloading a Youtube video with your favorite music, then changing it to audio, and you can then put it in your playlist.
You can also rename Images from .png to .jpeg(.jpg) and vice versa. However, one strange Image format is a .bmp. These are Bitmap images, which is the format that MS Paint uses. Bitmap is a way of saying like Pixel Art, and the font/text on your screen is made up of many different bitmap images.
There are many different forms of... other... File Extension like compressed folders. These are things like .zip, .rar, .win, and much more, leading directly into my next page.
