14th august,
my beautiful son,
we are waiting for you anxiously. there is nothing here. no running water, no electricity, we slept on the cold ground last night but we are so happy. my son, we are finally free, we have found home, a safe haven, a place to call ours. i'll be waiting for the train tomorrow, with a smile on my face and a
flower in my hand.
my son, i hope i see you in punjab.

the train arrived but there was not a single person alive except for a six month old baby. my son, we waited for you but those flowers which i thought i would be giving you by hand now sit on your gravestone. they won't remember your name but i will make sure they remember your story. rest well, my son. we wouldn't be here without your sacrifice.
