Chloe was eating lunch when the story broke. One kid, no one knew quite who, but Chloe swears it had to have been Dan Charleston, who's had it out for Jackson since the second grade, was on his phone, and was the first to announce the news.
And did so gracefully, by exclaiming, "Holy crap! Chloe, Jackson's cheating on you!"
Chloe simply rolled her eyes and took a bite out of her sandwich, turning her attention back to Jackie and Kylie, who were in a heated debate about something from an anime.
Chloe's phone buzzed, making her jump a little in her seat. She looked down to see who it was from.
Deck the Halls
"Hey, dude. You need to check the newspaper. You're gonna wanna read this."
Chloe tilted her head, opening the link her friend had provided. "High School Heartbreak: The Jackson Brown and Whitney Carson Scandal" was the article's title. She scrolled down to see who wrote it. Written by Holly Jones, Executive Editor. If Holly wrote it, it had to be true. Her heart dropped down to her chest.
It's a strange feeling having your heart broken. You feel angry, sad, guilty, upset, and a flurry of emotions all at the same time.
As Chloe read the article, all the emotions mixed and bleed into each other to create heartbreak. Her boyfriend since eighth grade had cheated on her. With the cheer captain of their school's biggest rival. There were pictures and witnesses to prove it.
Chloe's blood began to boil. She deserved way better than this. How had Jackson and Whitney even gotten together? The question was a rational one. The only times they would have interacted would be at a game... unless...
She scanned the article for an answer. And sure enough, the missing link. Jackson and Whitney shared a mutual friend. Captain of Washington College Preparatory's football team, and Chloe's mortal enemy since freshman year when he and some of his team members scared the cheerleaders while they were practicing lifts before a game, causing Chloe, their flyer, to be dropped, earning her a permanently crooked nose.
He was the reason they met. He was the reason Jackson had cheated on her.
Chloe had hated him before, but now, she swore never to forgive him.
But before she started making revenge plans, she had to break up with Jackson.
