He never spoke much of the war and ignored the sleepless nights, the heavy drinking, and the smell of cigarettes that followed everywhere he'd go.
The pain and the memories were always there, like a chain around the ankles, weighing him down with every step he tried to take. He quickly figured that not moving forward at all seemed the easiest. So he stopped trying.
