I spent that night, the last night on Earth,
I spent it exploring the spaces between your ribs-
Watching to see your smile as my fingers grazed your soul.
I slept a little bit, but I'd wake up to your shivering and just look at your rosy skin,
And smile.
Unmoving but always animated,
Alive.
I wouldn't move though,
My arm around your waist,
Your hair in my eyes,
Your breath on my neck.
I could live and die like this.
I will.
I would fade in and out of consciousness,
Imagining moments with friends and then opening my eyes
To the dancing silhouettes of the pieces of my heart
-All laughing.
But the biggest bit was in my arms.
I could feel my heart beat bouncing back from the floor tiles,
Rhythmic,
Sad and happy,
Slow and fast and all the colors of my visceral emotions.
You gave me that letter when we woke,
I reached in and took out your perfume-
nearly dropped it on account of the tears and tremors,
torrent of emotion.
I will never forget.
I spent the last night on Earth in your arms,
And as the expanding sun engulfed the horizon line
-I held your hand and looked into your eyes,
I whispered,
"I love you, darling, I'm going to be fine."
