Dev's POV

"Are you almost ready?" My dad yelled from the bottom of the stairs. "Yeah, I'm just grabbing the last of my boxes!" I screamed back. I looked once more at my empty room, my mind flashing back to all the memories I have had here. It's overwhelming to think that I have to leave it all behind, but I know California will be amazing. I grabbed the large brown box sitting in front of me and flicked off the light switch. Once I got the heavy box to the bottom of the stairs, I set it down and looked outside. My dad was finished putting all the furniture and boxes into the moving truck and was sitting beside the car. "Dad, can you help me with my last box? It's kind of heavy." I laugh. "Sure kiddo!" He chuckled. Within a minute he was already storing my last box in the truck and waiting for me. I skipped to the car and sat in the passenger seat. "Are you ready to say goodbye?" I asked. I know how hard it is on  my dad to make this move. Ever since my mom died, he's been depressed and attached to the house because it's the only thing left of her. When he got a job offer in Cali a few weeks ago, I forced him to take it because I knew it would make him happier. "I think so. I hope your mom is okay with us leaving this house behind." I could see his eyes start to water, but he blinked rapidly before the tears could overflow. "I know that mom would be happy we are making a new life for ourselves. She loves us very much no matter what and you know that." He turned to give me a smile and eventually went in for a hug. "I love you very much Dev. I hope you like California."
*****
"Dad this house is gorgeous!" I shouted. I looked up to the two story house we will be living in from now on. "I'm glad you like it. I tried really hard to find the perfect house for us." I ran up to him and engulfed him in a hug. Afterwards, I walked into the house and looked around. I have seen a few pictures of the main rooms, but it didn't look anything like this. "Where is my room?" I asked curiously. "It's upstairs, the last room all the way down." My dad yelled from the front lawn. I ran up the stairs and peeked into each room. There were three bedrooms and my dad and I each had our own bathroom. Once I finally got to my room, I opened the door. The walls were painted a light blue and the room itself was huge. I start visualizing where I can put all my furniture when my dad screams for me. "Can you help me unload the truck? We can look at everything later!" I run back down the stairs and to the truck outside. It took 2 hours, but we unloaded everything. My new room is now filled with a hundred boxes. All the moving made me hungry, so I look through the kitchen for something to eat. All I find is frozen chicken so It'll have to do. I find a plate and fork in a box on the counter and place the chicken in the microwave for 2 minutes. I look out the window and see my dad sitting on the front steps. His face is covered by his large hands, and his posture is slumped. I decided to walk out and sit next to him. "Dad, are you okay?" I questioned. He sniffled twice and then replied. "Yes sweetie, I'm fine. I just miss your mother a lot." I sling my arm around his shoulders and place my cheek on his arm. "It's okay to miss her dad. I miss her a lot too. I think about her every day." The thought of her brings tears to my eyes, and my heart begins to ache. "I shouldn't be this weak in front of you. I'll start being stronger for you okay?" I look at his face that now has tears streaming down it and smile. "I love you. You can be weak sometimes." The conversation made me depressed, but I had to put a smile on my face for him, or else he would break. "I know. We can talk later if you want, but I have to drive the rental truck back and bring our car to the new house. Be careful while I'm gone okay. You can begin to unpack your room." I lightly nod and get up from the steps. I offer him my hand to help him up and he gladly takes it. We part our ways and he drives off with the truck that I will never see again. Once he is no longer in sight, I close the door and head up to my room. The first thing I look for is my computer. I find it in the third box I opened, and set it on the ground. I logged into my user and began playing Come Home by OneRepublic. I let my mind drift into the music while I unpack my boxes. Soon enough, I have everything scattered on the floor and the boxes are all empty. I check each box one more time, and then crush them all so they are flat. I brought them downstairs and set them near the trashcan in the kitchen. I was about to go back upstairs, but the doorbell rang loudly. I looked out the window to see who it was, knowing it wasn't my father. It looked to be a girl about my age, with blonde hair. I opened the door and smiled. "Hello, my name is Ashley. I live across the street and I saw the moving truck earlier. I just wanted to introduce myself." She smiled politely, but stood awkwardly. "Hey I'm Devan, but you can call me Dev. And yeah I just moved in a couple hours ago. You can come in if you want. My dad isn't home. He had to return the truck to the rental place where we used to live." I open the door wider and lead her up the stairs to my room. My things are scattered everywhere, but I find a seat in the corner of the room. She sits next to me, criss-crossing her legs, and looks around the room. "This is a really nice bedroom." I smile widely. "Thank you. I think my dad did a pretty good job of finding a nice house." I reach for my laptop and put the music on a lower volume so I can hear her better. "So tell me about yourself!" She says, smiling at me. I just noticed how blue her eyes are, they sparkle under the light. I've always wanted blue eyes. "What do you want to know?" I laugh. She starts naming off things that she wants to know, so I begin answering them. "My favorite color is blue, I love to sing, I play softball and volleyball, my old school was really nice, I have no siblings, and my favorite animal is a giraffe." I list off answers. "Why did you move to California?" I could give her the long explanation, but it is easier not to. "My dad got asked to work here, so we moved. It was an amazing opportunity for him." I said. "Is your mom with your dad returning the truck?" She asked curiously. My chest began burning, and I felt the tears bulging in my eyes. I coughed a little to clear my chest, and then blinked my eyes so she couldn't see the tears. "Actually, my mom died of cancer a few months ago." I looked away from her blazing eyes down to the floor. "I'm so sorry Dev, I wouldn't have brought it up if I knew." I wipe my nose and look back up at her. "It's fine. I'm sure many people will ask once they meet me." She reaches for my laptop and types in a song. "This is one of my favorites. It's my boyfriend's band, they're not big yet but I know they will be in the future." I think it's funny that people have boyfriend's and girlfriend's this young. I am only in 6th grade, so I've never really thought about boys that way. "What is the band called?" I am curious to know. "5 Seconds Of Summer" She replies. I like the name, it's different than all the bands out there now. "Well maybe I can meet them sometime!" I am hinting that I want to, but I'm not sure we are close enough for her to start introducing me to people. "I'm sure they would love that! One of my friends is throwing a party at her house tomorrow, and the band is playing as a favor to her. You can meet everyone there. That way, you'll be friends with everyone before school starts!" I smile so widely I must look stupid, but I don't care. "Thank you so much! I can already tell we are going to be the best of friends." She smiles at my remark. "Are you sure it's okay I'm here without your dad home?" She asks. "Yeah, he's really chill about everything. He will be happy I made a new friend so quickly." I let her take my laptop and we listen to 5 seconds of summer for what feels like hours. I really like their sound. They are only doing covers now, but I can picture them getting big in the future like she said. I hear the front door open and I bolt down the stairs, Ashley following me at a slower pace. I see my dad in the kitchen, unpacking a bowl. "Hey Dev, what did you do while I was gone?" Right after he finished his sentence Ashley appeared right behind me. "Oh hello, I'm Devan's father! Did you meet a new friend while I was gone?" I grin at him and introduce Ashley. "Yes, I did. This is Ashley. She lives across the street and a little while after you left she came to introduce herself. Ever since, we've been upstairs talking and listening to music." She steps forward and is now by my side "Pleased to meet you." She offers her hand and my dad shakes it firmly. "Well you kids go have fun. I'm just going to eat cereal for dinner. I'll have to unpack the rest of our food tomorrow." He begins pouring cereal into a bowl before I can tell him we have no milk. "Dad can I ask something?" I say quietly. "Of course. Anything." I walk to the island and sit on a bar stool. "Can I go to Ashley's friends house tomorrow with her? She said her friend is having a party and everyone in our grade will be there. It's a great way to meet everyone and make friends before school starts!" Usually my dad is easy going, but sometimes he can be protective and won't let me go to things. "Sure honey! It sounds like a lot of fun. I hope you make tons of new friends, I'm sure you will." I smile and return back to my room with Ashley. After I shut my door, I turn to her. "You can sleep over if you want! I just have to find my sheets and adjust my bed. Hopefully tomorrow everything will be put away." I begin searching for where I placed my sheets in my room. "That sounds great. I just have to ask my mom if it's okay. Do you want to come to my house while I ask her and grab my stuff?" I stop looking for my sheets and head toward my door. "Sure, I would love to!" I walk back downstairs and wait for her by the front door. "Dad, I'm going to Ashley's house for a few minutes. She has to ask her mom if she can sleepover and get her pajamas." "That's fine" He yells while his mouth is full of dry froot loops. I open the door and let Ashley out first to lead the way. We walk across the street in a timely manner. The sky is getting darker, it should be pitch black out soon. I notice the sound of all the cars and all the stars forming in the sky. It's a beautiful night. Ashley opens her front door and lets me inside. We walk through her living room and find her mom sitting at the table next to the kitchen. "Hi mom! This is my new best friend Dev. She just moved in across the street. Can I sleepover her house?" She sounded so eager to ask. "Yes, if that's alright with Dev's parents." She looks over to me, and I nod my permission while smiling. "Yayyy!" Ashley shouts while running to the stairs. We head up to her room and she opens her door. It is a fairly small room, her bed in the center. She has a piano on the left of her bed and a nightstand on the right. She also has a white desk in the corner of her room filled with books. "I love your room!" I say while looking around. "Thank you. I'm starting to hate it though." She says while ruffling through one of her closets to get pajamas and clothes for tomorrow. She finally comes out with shorts and a big shirt to sleep in, and an outfit for the party. "I'm ready!" She says while standing up. I walk out of her room and back down the stairs. I wait for her to say goodnight to her mom and open the front door. Once she does, I head outside and look at the sky again. It is completely black now, with stars shining brightly. I know my mom is up there somewhere, watching and protecting me. I look back down when Ashley grabs my arm. "Aren't you coming?" She giggles. "Yeah, I just got distracted. The stars are so beautiful." I say while heading toward my front door. "They usually aren't this bright. Maybe It's just because you moved here." She smiled at me. We return to my house within the next minute and I let her inside. My dad is no longer in the kitchen but his bowl remained empty on the counter. "Dad?" I shout. "Up here!" His voice trails from upstairs. I run up the stairs and enter his room, telling Ashley I will meet her in my own in a minute. "I'm going to bed. Goodnight, love you." I smile at him. "Goodnight, love you, try not to be too loud. It's been a long day." I keep that in mind as I travel to my room. When I open the door, my bed is being made. "I found your sheets in that pile over there. I figured I could help by making your bed." Ashley said while pulling a sheet and tucking it under the mattress. "Aw thank you, you didn't have to do that." "But I wanted to!" She smiles quickly. I go to the other side of the bed and help her tuck the sheets. After, she throws the comforter on top and pats it down. My pillows are in the corner of the room, placed on my chair that belongs with my desk. Before I get the chance, Ashley grabs a pillow and chucks it at me. "Oh you did not just go there!" I laugh. I pick up the pillow and hold it by its end. I slam it into her side and she giggles. Within seconds, we were having a full blown pillow fight. It took up a large portion of our night, but It made me really tired. "What side of the bed do you want?" I ask before jumping onto the bed. "Right" She answers while tucking herself in. Once we both get settled, I shut off the light and turn my head to face her. "Thank you for becoming my friend. It means a lot considering I know nobody here." Even though it is dark, I can still sense her smiling. "I'm glad I became your friend. Trust me, by the time tomorrow night comes, you will be the most popular girl in our grade!" I laugh, considering I have never thought about being popular. We end up talking for hours; about boys, school, grades, family, music. The last thing I remember is looking at the alarm clock which read 1:30, before drifting off to sleep.
*****
I awake to the sound of the TV downstairs. I look to my right and find Ashley still sleeping, so I slowly crawl out of bed and head to my bathroom. The mirror shows my hair in a messy bun, with my long t-shirt in a jumble. I quickly loosen my hair from the hair tie and brush it in little strokes. My hair is rather long, almost down to my belly button. It is a light brown, with natural streaks of blonde. It is very straight; even when I try to curl it, it just turns wavy. Once my hair is tangle-free, I reach for my toothbrush. I gently move it back and forth on my front teeth, and then continue at a faster pace. Once I am done, I set it down and grab my deodorant. I just began using it a few months ago. I didn't need it in elementary school, but I figured middle school was different. After it was applied, I cleaned my face with sea breeze. I love the tingling feeling it gives me while cleaning my face. After I am satisfied with my look in the mirror, I return to my room to pick out clothes to wear. I see Ashley is awake and looking at something on her phone. "Good morning" I greet with a smile. "I was wondering where you went! Morning." She says politely. She gets up from my bed and walks toward the door. "Is it okay if I use your bathroom? I need to get ready." "Yeah that's fine. Its the second door on your right." I nod toward the hallway. She walks out of the room and I begin hunting for clothes. I am glad I put all my clothing away in my closet yesterday, or else I would have been digging in boxes for it. I don't know what to wear to the party tonight, but I'm assuming it is somewhat casual. I check my weather app and It is supposed to be 83 degrees today. I decide on high waisted white shorts, and a black cutoff top. Once I am fully dressed, I find a plain necklace to put on and search for my black beanie. Since I am wearing my hair down, I figured It would be a nice touch. As soon as I place It on my head, the door creaks open. "Dev, you look great!" She says, her eyes glowing. I turn around and see her in a similar outfit. She had dark skinny jeans and a tight fitted crop top. "So do you! I am so excited for this party." I laugh. She comes up to me and wraps me in a quick hug. "I am so glad I get to take you!" I grab my phone and head downstairs. My dad is in the living room watching a cartoon. He still acts like a little kid, It's kinda funny. "Morning Dad." I say while sneaking up on him. He jumps a little while turning around. "Oh hi Dev, I didn't see you come down the stairs." He says while turning back to face the TV. "I'm leaving soon with Ashley for that party I told you about." I said once I realize that it is nearly the afternoon. "That's fine, just be careful." I hear Ashley come down the stairs, and soon she is by my side. "Are you ready to go? The party starts in an hour but she asked to meet you before hand." Excitement bubbles up inside me as I hear someone wants to meet me. "That's fine, I'm ready to go. See you later Dad." I said while grabbing my black vans. I opened the front door and let her walk out. Ashley told me that her mom will be driving us and her friend's house is 20 minutes away so I decided to bring my headphones. Once we were outside, Ashley took the lead. I discovered her mom is already in the car parked in the driveway, so we head that way. I let Ashley jump in the car first, and then I slid in next to her. "I'm so excited for you to meet everyone!" Ashley squeaked while unraveling her headphones. "Me too!" I said while unwrapping my own. Her mom begins driving down the road, and soon enough all I see is other cars surrounding us and trees flashing by. I scroll through my music and find all of the covers 5 seconds of summer have sang. I listen to as many as I can before the car comes to a stop in front of a modern two story house. I jump out first and then say thank you through the window to Ashley's mom. Ashley slides out behind me and walks to the front door. She knocks three times and waits silently until we hear someone running to the door. "I'm coming!" I hear before the door glides open. "Hey guys! It's so nice to meet you Devan! My name is Kylee." She opens her arms and gives me a short bear hug. It was unexpected but nice to meet someone so outgoing. "Nice to meet you! Thank you so much for having me at your party I've been nervous since last night! Oh, and you can call me Dev." I introduce my nickname. She says okay and lets us inside. "People should be coming shortly. I wanted to start the party way later but my mom was being a bum about it so I had to start this early. You guys can stay as late you want though. The band will be playing at 6." She walks down a long hallway and into a large kitchen. It has an island the length of the entire room, along with chairs crowding the side. The top is filled with bowls of chips, dips, cheese and crackers, and endless bottles of soda. "Wow you have certainly prepared for this party!" I smiled. "Yeah, I've been planning it for a while! Hopefully everyone enjoys it. I just can't wait until people start arriving." It was like she had a power, because as soon as she said that the door bell rang. She hurried to get it and I kept walking around the house with Ashley. "Isn't it a gorgeous house? I love coming here." I nod and keep my eyes focused on the crown molding surrounding the walls. "I'm going to head out back, that's where everyone will be coming. You can come with me if you want. I'll introduce you to all my friends." I nod slightly and follow her out the back door. Her yard is huge, filled with a pool, patio, outdoor kitchen, and more than I would've imagined. A few people are already standing around talking to each other, and Ashley makes her way into one of the groups. I follow her quickly but quietly, not wanting to catch anyone's attention. Once she is in the crowd of people, they all welcome her and ask how she has been doing, until they lay their eyes on me. "Guys, this is my best friend Devan, but you can call her Dev. She just moved in across the street and will be going to our school! I wanted to bring her so she can meet all of you!" I await everyone's response, scared of what they might think of me. However, they all smiled and told me their names. Some even went into further conversation with me like Ashley did when she first met me. After meeting about 50 people, I decided to go inside to get a drink. "Ashley!" I yell to get her attention. "Yeah Dev?" She responds politely. "I'm going inside to get a drink, all of this talking got me thirsty. Do you want anything?" I asked. "No, I'm fine right now. Thank you though." I head inside and walk toward the kitchen. I see a few people in there, but most are outside. I reach for a red solo cup, and set it down next to the sprite. I turn the cap until it pops off, and then begin pouring the beverage. It is almost full when I feel a hand on my shoulder. I almost spill sprite everywhere, but luckily, I set it down before anything can pour out on the counter. I quickly turn around and see a tall guy inches away from me. "Hi beautiful, I'm Luke. I haven't seen you around before. Are you new?" My chest starts aching, but not in it's usual way; filled with sorrow. It feels like it's about to erupt with excitement. I feel butterflies in my stomach that I haven't felt before. Strange. "My name is Devan, but you can call me Dev. And yeah I'm new, I just moved in yesterday." I smile as normally as possible. My cheeks feel like they caught on fire, and the butterflies have not left. "It's nice to meet you Dev. Are you staying for the show?" I was about to say yes, but Ashley walked up to me and smiled. Luke looks a little uneasy, but I don't understand why. "I see you have met my boyfriend."
