Chapter 2

Dev's POV
(Present Day)

"Your projects are due after break. Make sure they are done to the best of your ability." My teacher rambles on. I let my mind drift to my plans after school, excitement bubbling up inside of me. Ashley is having a huge Christmas party, and we are swapping our presents. "Have a nice break guys!" Mr.Mable says. The bell rings loudly, and everyone scatters from their seats. I gather my books and shove them in my backpack, not caring if they get smashed. I slip my straps on my shoulders and walk through the door. Next is 7th period, which is my lunch. I head toward the large cafeteria, and search for my friends. I find them sitting where they usually do, in the corner at a round table. I walk toward the table, but someone taps on my shoulder. I whip around and find Ashton smiling at me. "Oh, hey Ashton!" I smile widely. "Hey Dev, I was wondering if you were coming to Ashley's party tonight." He knows I'm coming to the party already because I'm her best friend, but I answer anyway. "Of course. Are you?" He usually attends the parties I go to, but I ask just in case. "Yeah. I'll see you there." He has been acting awkward toward me for a while now, but I never think about it too much. We head toward our table, and I sit next to Ash and Luke. "Hey guys" I smile and reach for my paper bag filled with my lunch. "Hey Dev, are you excited for tonight?" Luke asks while his mouth is half full. Typical. "I've been thinking about it all day. Ashley always throws the best parties." I slam my shoulder into hers, and giggle like we used to when we were young. "Aw, I'm flattered you guys like my parties." Ashley replies. I open my sandwich bag, and stuff a piece of turkey in my mouth. I never eat sandwiches normally for some reason, I always pick them apart. Before I can shove another piece in my mouth, a tall boy comes up to our table and smiles at me. "Hey Devan, I was wondering if you wanted to go ice skating with me this weekend." My cheeks fill with heat, and I look away from his sparkling eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm busy this weekend with family plans. Maybe some other time?" I look back up to see his disappointed face looking down at me. "Alright." He walks away and sits down a few tables away from us. Ashley looks at me like I have 3 eyes, and I laugh. "What?" I ask. "Dev, why didn't you say yes?! He was really cute, and I know you don't have any plans this weekend." It's true, the plans thing was just an excuse, but I don't feel like dating right now. "Oh c'mon Ash, he was a total stranger. And you know I don't want to date anyone right now." I look down and finish eating my sandwich. "You need to start going out with people, experiencing life. You haven't had a boyfriend since freshman year, and he's the only one you've dated since you moved here." She isn't wrong, I really haven't dated anyone. It seems stupid, but I'm waiting for the right guy. I thought Scott was the right guy in 9th grade, but he turned out to be a jerk that cheated on me. I was heartbroken for months, and haven't dated since. "I'm experiencing life fine. I have friends and family. That's all I need. I don't need a guy to be happy." I feel proud of myself honestly. All these girls throw themselves at guys, just to feel loved. I have so many people that love me, I don't feel I need a guy. That's the only thing me and Ashley don't connect on. She has been dating Luke since the 5th grade, so she has never been without a guy. She doesn't know what it's like to not have a boyfriend, but honestly it isn't so bad. "Good for you Dev. I'm glad not every girl feels she needs a guy to keep her alive." Michael says from across the table. Next to him, Ashton and Calum nod in agreement. "Thanks guys" I say to all of them. Luke turns to face me, with no more food in his mouth. "What about if you find the right guy? Will you date then? I wouldn't want you to waste opportunities." Everyone looks at him strangely, like he just said something really weird. I find his words normal, considering he has always been protective of me. He acts like an older brother, and helps me through everything. "Yeah. I mean if I find the right guy then I will definitely give myself a chance with him." I say while stuffing a grape in my mouth. "That's good." Luke smirks, happy with himself. The rest of lunch is pretty quiet, everyone finishing their food. The bell rings to transfer classes, and the lunch room clears out within a minute. I say bye to all my friends that I will see tonight, and head to my last class. I have Spanish 8th period, which I surprisingly like. Once I get into the classroom, I see a tv set up with a DVD player underneath it. My teacher walks in, and so do a few of my classmates. "Are we watching a movie today?" I ask nicely. "Yes, we are watching The Cat in the Hat in Spanish." "Oh joy!" I mutter to myself in a sarcastic tone. The bell echoes in the halls again, and class begins. Since we were watching a movie, the time went by pretty quickly. After we are dismissed, I run to my locker and grab all the books I will need to complete my assignments. I walk down the stairs, towards the exit and through the street where the buses are parked. Even though I have my license, Ashley gives me a ride to and from school every day, just so we can have a little more time to hang out. I find her car in her assigned parking spot and wait beside the passenger door. A few minutes later, she comes out a side door, hand in hand with Luke. I think it's sweet that he walks her to her car every day, but for some reason it makes my chest knot. They seem to be laughing by the time they stop at the car, apparently at something Luke said not too long ago. He lets go of her hand and looks at me, almost painfully. "So I guess I will see you guys tonight then." He says while looking at each of us. "See you then!" I say smiling. Ashley kisses him on the lips, short and sweet, and then gets in the car. I follow her, and soon we are driving down the road. The first few minutes were silent, just the sound of music filling the air. But then Ashley speaks up, "I think Ashton likes you." Her suspicion makes me turn my head to face her, my cheeks already burning  with embarrassment. "What makes you say that?" I question. "He always looks at you at lunch. Not in just a normal way either, like he has a crush on you way. Not only that but when he talks to you he blushes like crazy, and he walks really close to you." I begin to laugh realizing everything she just said is true. "I think he's just friendly. We have been close friends for years now." She smiles and turns her blinker on to turn on our street. "Hey, you never know. We could both be dating members of the same band. That would be kind of cool." I like the idea, but I just have never thought of Ashton that way. She pulls up to her house and shuts the car off. "You can stay over if you want, but I have to get everything ready for the party." I really don't feel like setting up for a party, but I know she will enjoy the help. "I'll go home and get ready now. Then I can come and help you get ready, okay? When is the party actually starting?" I ask. Her face lights up and she turns toward me. "Thank you so much, that would be a big help. And people will start showing up around 8." I nod and open my car door, getting out rather quickly. "I'll be back soon." I yell while crossing the street. Once I get to my door, I throw my backpack in front of me and search for my key. I find it in a little compartment, and open the door. My dad should be at work, but I find him laying on the couch. "Dad?" I say quietly, walking up behind him. "Oh, hello sweetie." He responds. "Why are you home so early?" I question. "I felt a little nauseous at work so I decided to go home, they understood. Besides, I figured I could use a little rest. I have been getting really tired lately." His words make me worry about him, that it could be something serious. "Just let me know if you need anything at all okay? I don't want you getting really sick. You should go upstairs to bed and rest." I smile lightly and he nods. "Don't worry Dev. I'm sure it's just a little bug or something going around. I'll head upstairs and call you if I need anything. Aren't you going to Ashley's party?" I forgot that I told him about that. "Oh yeah I am, but if you need me I'll be here. The party doesn't start until 8 but I was going to help her get ready." I say while following him up the stairs. "That's fine. I'm sure I won't need you anytime soon, thank you for your concern though." He looks back and smiles at me. He walks into his room and I make sure he gets into bed before I rush off to my own. I first scramble through my closet for something to wear, laying my eyes on a short red dress. I take it off of it's hanger and lay it on my bed. I crouch down to find a pair of shoes at the bottom of my closet. I dig through old sneakers and flip flops until I find a pair of black heels. They only have a 2 inch heel, but that's plenty height for me, considering I am already 5'6. I grab them, and lay them beside my dress. I head into the hallway, and snatch a towel for my shower. Once I have it in my hand, I walk into the bathroom and set it down on the floor. I pull off my pants and shirt, laying them beside the door so I remember to throw them in the dirty laundry later. Now I am left in my underwear and bra, which I swipe off as well. I turn the knob in the shower to hot water, letting it heat up before I get in. Right when I put my right foot in, I hear the door bell ring. I can't think of anyone who can be coming over, but I decide to get the door anyway. I shut the water off and wrap a towel around my body, making sure it covers everything. Then I run down the stairs, making a hop at the last 2 steps to reach the door before the person leaves. I swing it open and find Luke, leaning on the side of the doorway. "I hope that's not what you're wearing to the party." He remarks as he walks into my living room. "Very funny. Why are you even here?" I ask more rudely than expected. "I thought we could hang out before going to the party. We haven't hung out alone in a while." I realize that we haven't actually hung out alone in a long time, which makes me feel bad. "Alright fine. But I have to take a shower and get ready for the party first. You can stay down here or chill in my room. Just try not to wake up my dad, he doesn't feel good." I say. He nods and walks up the stairs leading to my room. I follow him, and branch off to the bathroom. I close the door and lock it, just making sure Luke can't get in and pull a prank on me. He would do something like that. I drop my towel and begin the water  again, making sure it is hot before I step in. I find the rushing water soothing, like it is taking away everything bad in my life. I reach for the shampoo and squirt some into the palm of my hand. Once it begins dripping over, I shove it into my hair and start massaging my scalp with it. I rub all the way down to the tips of my hair, making sure it is all clean. Once I am done, I rinse it out and begin the same process with conditioner. After I have rinsed that out and washed my body, I turn off the water and reach for my towel. I dry off every inch of my body, and then swirl the towel around my hair. I grab my robe and wrap it around my body, knotting the tie in the middle. I open the door and head to my room. My door is already open due to Luke, so I just walk in. I find him sitting at my desk reading my song book. "Luke!" I yell. I run over and snatch the book out of his hands, closing it. "You aren't supposed to be looking through my things." I smack his arm. "I'm sorry, it was on your desk. I got curious, so I opened it. You are a really good song writer, you know that?" His remark made me smile, even though it shouldn't have. I wipe away my smile before he could notice and look at him. "It's not like they are going anywhere. I just write them when I'm bored, not a big deal." I answer. He just stares at me, and I stare back. It's like time is frozen, neither of us wanting to move. I finally break the moment and walk to my bed. "I have to get changed, can you please wait outside the door and not look through anything else." I say without looking at him. "C'mon I won't look. Besides, I've already seen you in a bikini and stuff this isn't different." His answer makes me mad, but he isn't wrong so I can't argue. "What would your girlfriend think if I was changing in front of you? I don't think she would be too happy." I say back. "She wouldn't know. But fine, I will go into the hallway and wait until you are done." He walks out of my room and shuts the door, and I walk over and lock it. "Was the lock really necessary?" He asks through the door. "Yes, it was." I reply. I go back to my bed and take off my robe. I put on my black underwear, and then my strapless bra. After that, I reach for my dress and hike it up my body until it is to my chest. I adjust the bottom, and then put on my heels. I unwrap my towel from my hair, and hold it in my hand. I decide to walk to my door and unlock it, now that I am completely dressed. Luke almost immediately opens it, and I throw the towel at him. "Thanks, I needed a towel." He smirks. "Oh, shut up." I laugh. I sit down at my mirror and begin searching for blush. Once I find it, I place it in front of me, and begin applying it lightly to my cheeks. "You don't need that stuff you know." Luke says, walking up behind me. "Yes, I do actually." I say back. He puts his hands on the back of my chair, looking at our reflection. "You really don't. You are pretty without makeup." He says through the mirror. I find my cheeks turning red so I look down. "If I don't put makeup on, no guy will ever like me. And heaven knows everyone wants me to find a date, so I kinda have to." I say under my breath. "Look Dev. You said yourself you don't need a guy to be happy, and I totally agree with you. Wait until you find the right guy for you, and then go for it. You shouldn't care what other people think." He says while sitting next to me on my extra chair. "How will I know who's the right guy if I don't look?" I say, beginning to apply more blush to my cheek bones. I find his hand on my arm, and I freeze. "You'll know if he's right for you." His face is only a couple inches from mine, and I look deep into his eyes. They are filled with so many emotions, some I can't even understand. "Okay" I whisper. He doesn't let go of my arm, and instead says "Stop putting that stuff on your face, okay?" I nod and he lets go. I set the blush down and reach for the mascara. "I'll only put mascara on for the party okay? Everything else will be completely natural." I turn to him. "Fine" He mutters. I face my mirror and look up, dragging the mascara through my lashes. Once I think they are presentable, I put the mascara down and stand up. Luke looks at me from head to toe, and then smiles. "See, you look stunning. Now let's go downstairs and watch a movie." I laugh and follow him out my bedroom door, walking toward the stairs. I take each step one at a time, not wanting to trip like I do often. After I get to the bottom, Ashley floats into my mind. "Shit" I mutter. Luke apparently hears me and stands next to me. "Are you okay?" He asks. "Yeah. But I just remembered I told Ashley I would help her get ready for the party." I say. He looks disappointed, but then he smiles. "Just tell her something came up and you can't help. I think she would understand." He says. I nod and get my phone from the kitchen counter. I type in my password and then go to my messages, searching for Ashley's name.
