"I can't be rattled by him."

Angelica shook her head sadly. "Everyone is, in the end."

"Then there won't be an end, this time."

Angelica stopped him and put her hands on his shoulders. "Listen."

John stared angrily into her eyes, which were soft with sympathy.

"You need to be careful. He's dangerous. He'll be pulling stunts any time now, and you're closest to him. You'll pay for any trust that you give him. Do not trust him."

"..."

"What is it?"

"He said some...odd things to me, last time."

"Like what?" Angelica backed up uncertainly.

"He said he didn't want to hurt me. He said he liked me. He said he wasn't thinking about what the consequences were for him, he was thinking it would damage me. He was very nonchalant about it all, but he said it so honestly..."

"John. I want to trust your judgement on this. But you could be setting yourself up for awful pain."

"I could also be setting up to save him."

John began to turn away and Angelica let him go, rooted to her spot. "Is it worth it?"

John didn't look back. "Yes!"
