(F/N) blinked a few times as the doctor in front of him waved the small flashlight in his eyes. The doctor wrote something down on the clipboard he held in his other hand. (F/N) shook his head, "Honestly I feel fine, I don't feel like I have a concussion." He blinked the spots out of his eyes.
The doctor looked at (F/N) with his brown eyes, "You seem fine to me, but it's standard procedure. I'll just take a sample of your blood and send you on your way."
(F/N) stuck out his left arm and sighed, he didn't have the strength to argue. (F/N) clenched his fist when he felt the sharp pain of a needle in his arm. He turned his head and looked at the door, he was ashamed that he missed all the action. Apparently, the gunman that had triggered the explosion had killed Dr. Erskine, he was a Nazi spy. Thankfully, Steve had chased him down and caught him. But before he could learn anything, in the words of Steve, 'the guy crunched his tooth and died.' (F/N) wished he had been there, maybe things would have been different, but he had been knocked out. He had failed yet again. (F/N) clenched his fist, it wasn't fair.
(F/N) looked at Steve, the now much larger man was sitting across from him, he looked even more upset. He was in a very similar condition, they had drained a lot more of his blood. The two were in a doctors office, in (F/N)'s case, he was being checked for a concussion.
As the doctor pulled the needle out of his arm, (F/N) put his arm down to his side. Steve spoke to the nurse that was taking his blood, "Think you got enough?"(F/N) noticed Agent Carter was leaning against a wall, she looked slightly angry but seemed alright. She pushed herself off the wall and spoke, her voice lacked the usual spark, as she looked at Steve" Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in your genetic code. But without Dr. Erskine it would take years."
Steve sighed and stood up, he pulled up his brown shirt and started to button it up, "He deserved more than this."
(F/N) chose that moment to speak, "If I hadn't been knocked out, I could have done something. I could have saved Erskine."
Steve looked at his friend, he finished putting on his shirt, "You couldn't help it. There wasn't anything you could have done."
(F/N) licked his lips and looked at his lap, Steve's words didn't make a dent. Steve turned away, he didn't have anything else to say to his friend. He walked out of the medical bay.
Once he had left, (F/N) pulled up his shirt. Agent Carter walked over to him, "How do you feel?"
(F/N) looked at the woman, "Physically, I feel fine, mentally...I could be better." Carter nodded, "Let me give you some advice."
(F/N) slid off the table he was on, he heard the sound of his shoes hit the floor. "Don't stay down, get back up an keep walking. That's what separates the exceptional from the failures."
(F/N) nodded, "I should go talk to Steve, and figure out the next move."
Agent Carter nodded slightly, her expression remained neutral as she followed (F/N) as he walked out of the medical bay. But right before they left, (F/N) put a hand on the door frame and stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Agent Carter?"
She looked up at him, but remained silent, (F/N) licked his lips, "Thank you."
Agent Carter nodded and smiled slightly, "Anytime."
(F/N) walked into the lab, to look for Steve.

Colonel Phillips was tired, curious, and above all angry. Today was supposed to be different, there wasn't supposed to be a Nazi spy, Dr. Erskine was supposed to survive, and there was supposed to be a hope for more super soldiers.
