A ladder dropped from the sky, and I pushed Amy up ahead of me. After her, Ash climbed up. Finally, Shawn grabbed my arm and we climbed up together.
When his warm body held me close to the ladder, for the first time in so long, I finally felt safe.
We reached the inside of the large hovercraft and were put to sleep on medicine. When I woke up, I peered down into the landscape of District 2.
I hugged Ash as she climbed down, and a screaming district lifted her into the air.
After a couple of minutes, we reached the large fence that signaled District 9. I reached out and hugged her tightly, and she let out a gentle sob.
"Goodbye." I whisper. "I love you. I really do."
Amy lets another tear slide down her cheek and then she climbs down.
I fall asleep again, and wake up only when Shawn gently kisses me.
"We're home." he whispered. "We're safe now."
I climb down and Layla runs forward, knocking the breath out of me.
I'm home. Layla's here, my mom, Joshua, Riley.
I really am home to stay.
