You and Tom both loved each other very much. Tom was an ordinary employee in your rich father's company. When you told your father about your relationship with Tom expecting his approval for your sake, instead he declined saying he's an ordinary man and he {your father} will not let you marry a man who could not afford your expenses. You tried your best to convince your father but he was adamant and then threatened you saying that he would fire Tom from the company. You knew Tom nedded the job delebirately for maintaing his rental house, sick mother's medication and little brother's study as he was the only working person of the family after his father's demise. Though it was hard for you to breakup with Tom for his own sake, but when you did explaining the reason while crying and sobbing apologizing him, the only reply you got back from him was that painful smile and teary eyes.
