TRIGGER WARNING: DOMESTIC DRUG USE

"Dad, do you want to come downstairs and watch a movie with us?" The girl knocked on her father's bedroom door, where she knew he and his new wife and stepchild resided. She also knew he was most likely getting high or already there.

The girl's father and his newfound family lived with her and her grandparents. She wasn't quite sure why her grandparents put up with him and his habits. Her father had stolen and pawned her and her grandparent's things, along with stealing money.

The girl brushed off the memories and knocked once more. "Dad?"

She heard him curse and shuffle across the room, but he still didn't acknowledge her. The girl sighed and trudged downstairs to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas with her grandparents and aunt and uncle. She curled up on the couch with her aunt.

Her aunt. Her rock. The only person she could come to to vent and talk with about her father's behaviors.

About 10 minutes into the movie, the girl heard footsteps going down the stairs and into the kitchen. She hurried to them to see her father rummaging through the fridge.

"Dad, will you please watch the movie with us?" She pleaded.

"Sure, sweatheart," her father assured her. "Just let me grab a snack and I'll be right in."

The girl grinned and excitedly ran into the living room. She sat down on the couch opposite from her aunt so she could sit with her father.

"What are you doing?" Her aunt asked. "Dad's gonna come in and watch it with me!" The girl exclaimed. Her aunt held a concerned look, but said nothing else.

A moment later, the girl heard her father go upstairs. She tried not to look too disappointed as she moved back over to the other couch to sit with her aunt.

After the movie, she went upstairs to read. She decided on Milk and Honey, a present from her grandmother.

She flipped to where she had left off and read the next poem.

a girl should not have to beg her father for a relationship.

The girl closed the book and went to bed. She heard banging and yelling, so she plugged in her headphones and turned on Disney Radio. She drifted off and dreamt of childhood and of better times.
