For the sake of an egg

This is the second of two entries in week two (survival) of PoetsPub Poet of the Year Contest. This is a Nocturna style poem.

Knowing the risks we built an enclosure.
Loosely sprung roofing to keep them at bay.
(Glowing confidence of no exposure)

Survival assured, perhaps though conceited
Eagerly waiting the eggs they will lay.
Arrival home most joyfully greeted.

Every Isa Brown given a name.
Happily producing there in the hay.
Reverie as silkies soon joined the game.

Throw in ducks and a drake for composure.
Profusely working just like any day.
(Growing despite imminent foreclosure)

Deprival endured as depravity metered.
Wily old fox had measured his prey.
(Reprisal thoughts then gutted, depleted)

Feathery new friends settled in a frame.
Joyfully play without risk of affray.
(Memory will never forget the shame)
