"Well, Ms.Cuthbert, Anne's head must've crashed down harder than I originally accessed." Gilbert was forced to wait in the kitchen while the adults conversed in the hall. Although he was listening at the door.
"When will she remember again?" Marilla questioned. Fear in her voice. She was practically shivering. "Well it's hard to say. If she doesn't remember within a week it probably won't come back to her." Marilla shed a single tear. "Thank you doctor." He showed himself out.
Gilbert let himself Into the din where Anne was seated anxiously. "Hi I'm-" Anne stuttered for a second. "Cordelia Vanderbilt, pleasure to make your acquaintance." She said excitedly.
Gilbert smiled at her enthusiasm but fear struck his eyes. "Hello, I'm Gilbert Blythe, I'm afraid to inform you I already know your name is Anne. But it'd be my honor to call you whatever your heart desires."
Anne's face melted back down. "It's quite alright Mr.Blythe you can call me Anne." She replied sadly.
Just at that, Marilla burst through the door. Gilbert backed away immediately. "Alright Alright." Marilla said quickly.
"Alright Anne this might be hard to understand but you've hit your head and you're suffering from a memory loss of some sorts." Anne's eyes fluttered a bit. "That's terrible. What will Mrs.Hamond think. Oh I better get back immediately. She'll have my head." The petite red head shot up looking for the door.
"Anne sit down. Let me explain." Marilla said sternly. Anne slowly lowered herself on to the couch.
"We've adopted you Anne. Me and my brother Mathew. You've lived with us for over a year now." Anne's eyes gleamed. A thousand possibilities running through her mind.
"Is this my adopted brother?" Anne motioned towards Gilbert. "No! I mean. No. I apologize." The outburst took Marilla off guard, it took all her might to suppress a smile.
"Well Anne, you defiantly need some rest but I think supper would do you well." Anne stood up and followed Marilla to the kitchen. Gilbert followed along a few paces behind.
After Marilla set out a bowls of stew for the children she rushed upstairs to check on Mathew. Gilbert took this as an opportunity.
"So Anne, can you remember Diana or Jerry?" He asked curiously. "No I apologize Mr.Blythe." Gilbert shook his head. Leaning forward in his chair.
"Gilbert. Can you not remember anything about me?" Anne shook her head again. Gilbert couldn't decided if this was a good or a bad thing. He had the chance to right his wrongs.
"If you aren't my brother who are you? A kindred spirit maybe?" Anne smiled enthusiastically. Gilbert smirked while his cheeks turned a crimson rose color. He couldn't answer that question, he didn't know how.
"Truthfully Anne, I'm not sure how to answer that." Anne was puzzled. What was he insinuating? Are they enemies? A thousand questions ran through her mind.
"What are you implying Mr.Blythe?" Her tone darkened. Gilbert could see the anger rising in her. The things this girl could assume.
"No! No, I just mean......" He trailed off for a bit. What was he to her? "I mean Diana, she's your best friend She'll explain everything tomorrow."
After a few more sips of stew Gilbert let himself out and headed home to explain everything to Bash. Gilberts night was sleepless. He worried that Anne would never remember him and they'd never been the same again. Meanwhile Anne laid in her unfamiliar bed, Recalling the events of the day and focusing an awful lot on Gilbert. She couldn't understand why but he consumed her thoughts.
Early in the morning Marilla went to wake Anne. No use in wasting a perfectly good school day. Besides, Marilla wanted the house to be calm for Mathew.
Anne did as she was told a dressed for the day. Leaving the house a bit early and heading down the way Marilla told her. While she was walking she heard a girl calling out her name behind her.
Finally Diana had cought up to Anne. "Oh Anne I was worried sick. Mother wouldn't let me come check on you last night. How are you?" Questioned her ebony haired best friend.
"I'm so sorry but I don't know who you are." Anne replied blankly.
"Anne don't be silly. It's hardly the time for games with everything going on." Diana said while continuing down the path.
"Oh I don't mean to be a burden but Mrs.Cuthbert said I hit my head and I can't recall a thing over the past year and a half." She said calmly. Diana could tell by Anne's tone that she was in no way playing a game.
"Are you Diana? I remember Mr.Blythe mentioning someone named Diana who was supposedly my best friend. Although I can't imagine having a best friend." Diana couldn't help but smile slightly.
"Well we have a lot to catch you up on..." Diana continued on while they walked down the path. Explaining the past year and a half in excellent detail .
"I kissed Mr.Blythe!" She whisper shouted. While walking up the steps. The bell hasn't rung but everybody's already inside. Anne's face was redder than her hair that she forgot to braid. Her hair was flowing and tied back in a ribbon just like Dianas. Marilla insisted this was how she wore her hair now.
The girls walked in the door and sat down in their seats without looking at the boys for one second. Gilbert had told most of the girls about the incident and Diana filled in the girls.
While class started Miss Stacey brought up the charity ball once again. Anne looked over to Diana in shock. "Nobody's going to ask me and I'll be the laughing stock of school!" Anne whispered to Diana.
"Don't count out "Mr.Blythe" Diana teased. Anne slumpped in her seat.
"Girls! Separate at once! Anne switch with Charlie." Miss Stacey demanded. The teacher was kind but did not except distractions in her classroom. The children ooo'd at the new arrangements. Anne couldn't get herself to look at Gilbert.
