I had to put the ring in the suitcase at my feet. In my pocket, it weighed fifty pounds. On a chain at my neck it felt like a noose. I couldn't even lift my hand with it on my finger. I've never touched a piece so imprinted by its previous owner.
She was kind and gentle, but the cruel words that rained around her pierced her heart, bleeding it out, bleeding her out, until she was an empty shell.
I'm going to wash the ring in the ocean. Only that much water can erase pain so deep and unjust.
