I glared over at Scarlett, before quickly turning back to my mother. She gently set the things in her arms onto the kitchen the table. She opened her mouth to say something, before closing it again. It took her a few moments to find her voice. In the mean time I found myself fiddling with the necklace my squip made me buy, trying to avoid my mother's confused gaze.
Finally, she said, "Why did.... why did you do this?"
I looked up to my mother, and she looked... disappointed. "What do you mean?"
"I just... you've never been the type to change yourself for others. I guess seeing you like this, worries me a bit."
I took this into careful consideration while trying to come up with my next words, "I'm still me. Just because I buy a few new clothes and start playing with makeup doesn't mean I don't still love comic books, or video games, or gory movies." I offered a smile at the end of my words, hoping this would be the end of this.
"But why did you do this in the first place?" My mom asked, once again. Her forehead creased as she scrambled her brain for any possible reasons.
I took a step closer to her, "I didn't change for anyone, if that's what you're wondering. I changed for me. I just... wanted a new start. New Jersey, New Me?" I mustered out a laugh at my joke. My mother turned to look at me.
The edges of her lips began to twitch upwards, and she couldn't help but laugh too. "I guess you still are my dorky little girl," she said walking to me. She engulfed me into a hug, and I wrapped my own arms around her.
I buried my face into her hair, my voice coming out muffled, "Do you want to have a horror movie marathon tonight? Since I'm leaving tomorrow?"
We pulled away from each other, my mother placing her hands onto my shoulders. "That's sounds great." My mother smiled at me, and I sent one back.
"Well, that went better than I anticipated," Scarlett said, slow clapping from behind me.
~
I pulled the cover up over my eyes, lowering them when the music seemed to stop. "Don't do it!" I shouted to the girl on the TV screen.
My mother clutched onto the covers, "You stupid idiot!" The girl on the TV put her hand onto the door knob. The music's back, becoming louder by the second. My mother and I couldn't help but lean closer to the television. Just then, the girl was grabbed from behind, letting out an ear piercing shrill. My mother and I leapt backwards, shrieking in unison. The woman turned around, her boyfriend laughing while holding her.
"God Dammit Mathew!" My mother screamed to the boy. I let out a shaky laugh, grabbing some popcorn from the bowl between us. I looked over to my mother, and smiled. I wondered if my mom's best friend in New Jersey was a horror movie person.
~
I crawled into my bed, leaving the lamp on, it lightly illuminating the room from my bedside table. The light flickered, and Scarlett appeared in front of me.
"What do you want, Scarlett?"
"I've been doing some digging, looking up information in your memory and other parts of your brain," she began to pace the room, and I sat up. "Your moving to New Jersey because of the theatre program they offer at the new school your moving to... this isn't good." She turned back to look at me.
"Why not?"
"You really think that being in the drama program is going to make you popular?"
"Drama is my life. There's no way I'm giving it up," I told Scarlett, my eyes hardening.
She pursed her lips. "Very well then." I turned away from my squip, laying my head back down. I pulled my phone out from under my pillow, double checking that my alarm was set. My new start, began tomorrow. I smiled as I drifted off to blissful sleep.
~
My phone began to blast a song from my favorite video game, pulling me from sleep. I pulled my phone out from under my pillow, stopping the alarm. My head crashed back into the pillow... just 5 more minutes.
"Get up," Scarlett said from behind me.
"No," I mumbled out. I heard Scarlett snicker as she snapped her fingers. "Ow!" I bolted upright, rubbing my head. "What the hell?" I asked her.
She simply shrugged, crossing her arms, "You wouldn't get up." I frowned, throwing the covers off of my body. My suitcase and bag still sat by my door. I peeled off my sleep clothes, dressing in my outfit for today: A short sleeved, white shirt, with a black skirt dotted with a flowers. I topped it all off with some black flats. I lazily walked into the bathroom, turning the light on. I examined myself in the mirror, shocked at the considerable lack of acne on my face. I quickly scampered into my room, grabbing my makeup back, being it with me into the bathroom. I tried to remember what I did yesterday, occasionally getting help from Scarlett. I put a few products into my hair, playing around with it until Scarlett seemed it acceptable. I sighed, returning the makeup bag to its spot in my smaller traveling bag. My stomach growled, begging for food as I exited my room.
"Hey, Mom," I greeted my mom sleeping.
"Hey, Sweetie," She said, sipping from her coffee cup. "Eat quickly, I have to get you too the airport soon.
"Ok," I said, grabbing a granola bar.
My mother eyed the bar, "You don't want to eat anything else?"
"I've never been a big breakfast person," I said truthfully.
"Ok, well, we'll leave in 10 minutes." I nodded as I entered my room. I tore open the granola bar, taking a bite out of it. I plopped down into my bed, taking a nothing bite of the bar.
I looked to Scarlett, "What do I do first when we get to New Jersey?"
"You have a lot of probable futures. We'll assess the situation once we arrive."
"Ok," I replied, finishing my granola bar. I crumbled the wrapper in my hand, walking to my luggage. I grabbed my smaller bag, tossing it over one shoulder, grabbing the suitcase with my other hand. My squip followed me as I entered the rest of the house hold. I tossed my wrapper into a trash can as my mother grabbed her keys from the kitchen table.
    "Ready?" She asked.
I could tell she was trying not to cry yet. "Yeah. I'm ready," I answered. I hauled my things out of the apartment complex and to the car. I dumbed everything into the trunk, keeping my phone in my back pocket. This was it... I was leaving.
~
My mom continued to hug me. "Mom, I'm going to miss my plane."
She let go, wiping tears from her eyes. She brought a hand to my face, wiping a tear from my face. "Ok. I know... please, be safe."
"I will," I say, my squip sighing begins me. I turn around to the person I had to ride with, being an unaccompanied minor and all. Even though I was 17 and could ride alone, my mother was very overprotective. I walked to the plane with the woman, turning around one last time to wave goodbye to my mother. I gave my ticket to the man at the boarding entrance, then walked on to the plane. I smiled as I took my sweet. New Jersey, New Me!
~
I sat on the bus, riding to my mother's friend's house. My legs were shaking with giddy.
"Stop shaking your legs," Scarlett ordered.
"Sorry," I replied, trying to calm my legs. The bus rounded another corner before stopping.
"This is your stop," Scarlett said.
"Oh, right," I stood up, gathering my things and exited the bus. On my way out I sworn I could have seen a guy in a red hoodie watching me. I pushed the thought out of my mind. I scanned the house numbers until I found the correct one. I stumbled up the steps, then rung the doorbell.
"Coming!" A chirpy voice sang from inside, who I assumed was Ricky, my mother's best friend. The door flung open. I couldn't believe my eyes. This was my mother's best friend? She had bright pink hair, pretty revealing clothing, and some huge ass heals. She looked like she never left college.
"Amanda! Look at you! You're all grown up! Cindy made one beautiful kid! Give me a hug!" She said, arms held open.
"Um... I would if I could," I said, nodding to the luggage I was holding."
"Oh! Yes, come in, I'll show you to your room." She stepped out of the door way, letting me enter. I was steered to a room fairly large to my standards. There was even a desk set up in the corner. And a TV in the dresser! I stood, mouth agape.
I finally closed my mouth, then said, "Wow, my thank you. I'll, um, I'll unpack now," I said, still taking the room in.
"Ok, I'll leave you to it!" She skipped away, and I closed the door behind me. I set down my luggage. I stepped farther in the bed. I spun around the room, giggling. Becoming dizzy. I laid down on the actually comfortable bed. I couldn't help but squeal in diligent. This. Was. Awesome!
~
I dusted my hands off, finally finished packing. I sat back down to the bed, looking to my squip.
"Do I have to do anything else, or can I play video games and read comic books?" I asked, eyeing the TV were I set up my gaming console and my comic books which also sat on the dresser.
"No relaxing yet, Amanda," she said walking over to sit next to me. "You need to go out. Show off yourself to the mall. I happen to know there will be some critical people from your new school at the mall. You need to become friends with these people if you want to climb the social ladder."
I pouted. "Fine." I grabbed my purse from the floor, swinging it over my shoulder. I exited my new room, looking around for Ricky.
When I didn't see her, I decided to shout, "I'm going to the mall, Ricky!"
"Okie doke!" A voice replied from the second floor I hadn't even known existed. I left the house, Scarlett walking next to me.
"Sooo, who are these critical people I'm going to meet?" I asked.
Scarlett's heels clicked on the sidewalk. "Brooke Lohst, Jenna Rolan, Chloe Valentine, Rich Goranski, and Jake Dillinger."
"Ok... that's a lot of people," I laughed nervously.
"You'll be fine," Scarlett's hand landed on my shoulder, and I turned to look at her, "because you have me." She smiled almost evilly. I turned back forward, following my squip as she guided me to the mall. I entered the large building, examining the new faces. Lost in thought, I crashed into someone. Their things clattered to the ground.
"Ah, I'm so sorry!" I apologized reaching down to pick up their things, "I wasn't watching where I was going."
The other person knelt down too, "It's fine," they said.
I picked up a video game from the ground, "Apocalypse of the Damned?" I looked up into the face of a tan skinned boy. A smile spread across my face, "I so forgot that it was coming out today! Dammit, are there any left?" I asked, standing up along with the boy, handing him the game.
"You like video games?" He asked, confused.
I laughed, brushing some hair from my face. "Is it that hard to believe?" I asked, forgetting about my new look.
"I, um, sorry." He stammered.
"It's ok," I said. "You know how you can make it up to me?"
"No?"
"You can tell me if there's any left, and then buy me the game!" I joked.
"Um, ok," he said.
I giggled, "I was joking. I just need you to point me in the right direction. I'm new here."
"Yeah, I didn't think you looked familiar," the boy laughed, "The store's that way," he said, pointing to the right. "They only have a few left," he added.
"Well, thanks!" I said, beginning to leave. "Oh, wait! What's your name?"
He turned back to look at me, "Michael."
"My name's Amanda," I responded, shooting him a smile.
He smiled at me as well then said, "See you around, Amanda."
"See you!" I began to walk down the mall, toward the game shop.
"You can't buy that game, not if your going to talk to those other students today," Scarlett pointed out once we're away from Michael.
I let out a sigh, "But I've been wanting that game for ages."
"You have to make sacrifices. Like that guy, Michael, he also going to your new school, but you can't associate with him. Not if you want to be cool."
I turned to Scarlett, "So I'm just supposed to ignore him?"
"Yes," she answered coldly. I turn away, and pass the game shop. The sweet aroma of food makes it way to me as I enter the food court. I look around and my eyes land on a group of teens.
"Are those the people I need to talk to?" I question.
"Yes, you need to become close to those teens." I nod and walk over to the group.
"Mind if I sit here?" I asked a girl with blonde hair.
Her voice was slightly high pitched as she talked, "Sure!"
A girl with brown, slightly red hair wasn't so accepting, "Um, who are you?"
"I just moved here from," I was about to say Missouri when my squip interrupted me.
"California," Scarlett said.
"California," I repeated.
"Oh, sweet! Did you surf with dolphins and stuff?" A tall, brunette, boy asked.
"Repeat after me," my squip began, "Yeah!"
"Yeah!" I repeated.
"I was surfing once..."
"I was surfing once..."
"And this huge wave came from nowhere."
"And this huge wave came from nowhere."
The teens where on the edge of there seats as I continued to listen to my squip, "I was knocked off of my board."
"I was knocked off of my board."
"I knew for sure I was going to drown when I was knocked underwater," I said, continuing the story on my own. "I scraped my arm on this huge rock," I said, sliding up my arm to reveal a long scar on my arm, "and then this dolphin came up and helped me to the surface. It hella cool," I finished, Scarlett nodding in approval at my story.
"That's fucking sick," said a shorter boy.
"Yeah, I guess it's kinda cool," said the brunette girl. "By the way, I'm Chloe," she pointed to the blonde, "that's Brooke," she pointed to the taller boy first, "That's Jake, and that's Rich."
I took a seat at the table, "I'm Amanda." I continued to talk, with the help of Scarlett, to the teens at the table.
Chloe pulled a flask from under the table, "So, Amanda, do you want to have some fun?"
I looked to the flask, I wasn't much of a drinker. Yeah I'd had some beers before, but did I really want to do this? "Bring it on," I said.
Chloe handed the bottle to me, "It's whiskey mixed with this weird, limited edition soda. I think they stop selling it today."
"Cool," I said, grabbing the flask.
"Yeah, it's pretty strong, all of us have had it.. well except Rich," Jake added, nudging Rich.
"Because it's gross, not because I'm a light weight. I've tried the soda and it's fucking disgusting," Rich defended.
Scarlett looked at Rich intensely. I shrugged, "Well, that's not going to stop me." I took a chug from the flask, the rest of the group cheering. I gave Chloe the flask back. "So, what soda is in it?"
"Some weird blue Mountain Dew," Brooke answered. Shit.
"This should be interesting," Scarlett said from behind me. For some reason this pain was even worse than from before.
I tried to keep myself from yelling, but failed, "Ah fuck!" I clutched my head, standing up from my seat, it falling behind me.
"Yo, are you ok?" Jake said. I looked to him, tears brimming my eyes. Rich gave me a look, like he knew something.
I tried to step away, "No, I..." I couldn't finish speaking. I felt my eyes roll back, and I fell to the ground. I hit the floor. The others gathered around me, and the last thing I saw before I lost consciousness was a man, flickering from behind Rich. He smirked at me. Rich had... a squip.
