the word hanahaki comes from two japanese words:

hana, which means flower, and hakimasu, which means to throw up.

it is a fictitious disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when suffering from unrequited love.

it ends when the person they love returns their feelings or when the victim dies.

it can be cured through surgery though, but removing the flowers/petals also means that the victim's romantic feelings will be gone. and that they can never love that person again.

there are many people who decide to die instead of not being able to love that person again, preferring to die loving that person rather than to live not being able to love them.
