the boy on the beach

the sun was shining on his dark skin,

the freckles on his face like spots on a treasure map.

the smell of his cologne was like home to me,

and the wind mixed the sweet scent with the ocean.

his black t-shirt was speckled with the grainy sand

that made him laugh as he tried and failed to brush it off.

when he stood with a bright smile sent my way,

he made a dumb joke about my height compared to his

that he knew only i would laugh at.

i rolled my eyes, smiling when he wasn't looking.

i couldn't help but watch as he walked to the water

like he knew exactly how he made me feel.

his hair was stuck to his face as he brushed it out of his eyes,

and when he came out, he shook it like a dog in my face.

i laughed, making a dumb joke about his hair,

but he still laughed

the way he spoke made me smile at what he was saying,

his accent making the words sound all the more beautiful.

with each day i spent with him, i learned a little fact about him

for the gloomy days without the bright light in my life around.

i was proud to know the real him; the him no one else got to see.

his stupid jokes, his rosy cheeks when he's embarrassed,

his sheepish smile when he knocks on my door

to give me a bouquet of pink peonies - my favorite -

whenever he knew he did something to make me angry at him.

his fake american accent that makes me laugh harder than I ever have before.

i could sit and talk with the beautiful boy on the beach for hours

while fearing that i would fall in love with him.
