i. the arctic was named after bears , the greek word 'arktos' meaning bear . while the antarctic means without bear .

ii. polar bears do not hibernate , unlike most bears . 

iii. as many probably already know , polar bear does in fact have black skin . they also have hollow , transparent fur .

iv. polar bears actually fast when they cannot find seals . they don't always eat other prey , instead they fast for up to 160 days .

v. although they are considered marine mammals , when on the ice they are technically largest land carnivore .
