I looked up from my laptop to see Dean with a frown on his face as he dug through the pocket of his jeans, becoming confused when he pulled out a crumpled piece of paper and threw it on the table next to my hand. He was now smirking, and that could only mean that he was up to no good.
Sighing, I reached out and un-wadded the paper anyway. I couldn't help but roll my eyes as I saw when I saw a sloppily scrawled phone number written on it.
"Seriously, man?" I asked, raising my eyebrows before crushing the paper again and shooting it into the trash can. "I'm assuming that your little rendezvous last night didn't work out if you're giving that to me."
"Wrong," he triumphantly responded, a lazy grin spreading across his face. "That number belongs to my "rendezvous'" sister. And for the record, she was awesome."
"Even more of a reason to stay away," I mumbled, turning my eyes back towards the screen of my computer. Dean abruptly slammed it down, nearly on my fingers, and I barely had time to pull them back from my keyboard. "What?"
"Dude, you need to get back into it," His words were playful, but I could see that he had sorrow in his eyes. "I haven't seen you with a girl in months."
"Well, my days off aren't all about girls and sex," I could not believe that my older brother was trying to make me break over this, and shifted in my seat in annoyance. "Not that you need a day off in order to get those things."
Dean shrugged before becoming serious again. "Look, Sammy. I just that you're just maybe...overwhelming yourself with cases. You need to have some fun every once in a while."
I scoffed, pushing off and out of my chair so I could get to the refrigerator. "Maybe I'm just fine without any love in my life, Dean. You don't need to worry about me and my lack of romance. I've given up." Opening the fridge, I reached in and expected to find a bottle of beer right away; I groaned when I looked inside and it was empty. "Really? Why didn't you say anything?"
"Didn't cross my mind."
"Fine, then!" I huffed, throwing on my jacket and heading towards the door. "I'm going to get some more beer. When I get back, I don't want to have this discussion with you again."
I didn't give him time to respond before nabbing his keys and slamming the door on his next sentence, sighing in irritation as I got into the Impala. As I started the engine and drove out of the motel parking lot, I noticed that my knuckles were turning white as they clutched the steering wheel, and I forced myself to calm down and ease off of the gas pedal a little.
It had been inevitable, Dean talking to me about my love life, and he hadn't been too subtle, either. Dropping subdued hints really wasn't his forte, that fact proven by him trying to get me to go out with him to different bars and forcefully introducing me to women that he met while on cases. I hadn't been interested in either, and that was obvious. After Jess, Sarah, Madison, and then Amelia, I just couldn't see myself being happy with another woman who'd either end up dead or would let me weave complications into their life without even being aware of it. Love was just not something that I needed, especially in the hunting life; it was something that I just couldn't live with. I could always do it Dean's way, a different girl in a different motel every other night, but that would never be fulfilling to me. Right now, what satisfied me was burying myself in work.
After pulling into the lot of the nearest grocery store, since there was no gas station near by, I locked the car and was interrupted by my phone beeping. It was Dean, telling me to get him some pie as if he didn't know that I was a bit more than a little exasperated with him. He knew that I would get him some anyway, though, and I mentally cursed that knowledge. But hopefully, just maybe, it would shut him up about the whole "finding love" thing.
Right when I walked into the store, I almost went back out because of the song playing over the intercoms, one about love that really made the place distasteful. I was sure that it would have been a nice tune on any other day. Shuddering, I made my way towards the aisle that consisted of beer and other alcoholic beverages, and made haste to find the brand that we always had around because Dad, even though he had been such an ass, had great taste in beer and had introduced us to it. I had to crouch down to the ground in order to pick out a case quickly, and then got up so that I could find wherever the pies were. I was walking so fast that I was barely paying attention to where I was going, and panic shot through me when I suddenly hit another body. I knocked the young woman over, and I almost fell as well before catching myself on the edge of a table.
"I am so sorry," I apologized as I helped her up into a sitting position. "That was totally-" I knew that my jaw went slack when I finally saw her face, but if she noticed, she didn't say anything. Her mouth was curved into a perfect little smile that made warmth go through me, and it reached her beautiful eyes as well. They were filled with something genuine that I hadn't seen in a long time. Optimism? Maybe it was bravery? I couldn't differentiate between different ideas that were whirling inside of my head, but all I knew was that it was something that I had been looking for. Snapping myself out of it, I took her hand so that she could keep her balance while getting back on her feet. "-my fault."
She laughed lightly before looking back up at me, and just the sound of her voice alone made me break into my own grin.
"I know," she joked, her gaze becoming teasingly devious. "I should sue you."
"That's not a very good idea," I played along a smirk playing at the corners of my mouth. "I studied law for a good few months."
"That's not surprising, since you're so good at knocking other people down," I opened my mouth to protest, and she dissolved into laughter once more. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding!"
"You had me convinced," I chuckled along with her. "I'm Sam, by the way."
"Y/N," she responded brightly. We realized at the same time that our hands were still intertwined, so we just shook them before letting them fall back to our sides again. "So, why were you just in such a rush?"
"Just...annoying siblings," I shrugged, and she winced.
"Ouch. Is it like, you know that they care but it's just really not any of their business?"
"We've only just met, and you know something about me already!" I teased, and she smiled widely.
"Well, I'll give you an offer," She tucked her hair behind her ear, and I wondered for half of a second what it would feel like to be the one to do that. "How about I help you find whatever you're looking for, and we can get to know each other while we search. Do we have a deal?"
I nodded, my grin growing bigger. "This is definitely one of the better ones that I've made."
We started to make small talk as we walked down one of the store aisles, and I felt myself becoming more and more infatuated with her the way that she carried herself. In all honesty, I had completely forgotten about me wallowing in work and what Dean had told me; all I was focused on was her.
"Of course, that was only-" She suddenly stopped in the middle of her sentence, and listened for a few seconds; a light bounce appeared in her step after they had passed. "I love this song!"
""The Only Exception"," I murmured, and she nodded excitedly.
"Do you like this song, too?"
"Not particularly," I told her, admiring the soft curve of her smile before bringing my eyes up to hers, the ones that were radiating with the aspiring emotions that I simply could not pinpoint and place. "But I'm pretty sure that I've just found mine."
