She lay on the ground beside him, hands held and fingers intertwined. Tears brimmed her tired brown eyes as she pressed her forehead against his. 

If this was going to cause you so much pain, why didn’t you just give up? 

His heart began to hammer against his chest, not because of what happened only moments ago but because this was what he longed for.

His hands found her waist and supported her back as he stared into her questioning eyes. His breath fanned her neck as he looked down at her before whispering,

 I said I’d never let you go, and I never did.
