Chapter Two- Ander

Chaos. Complete and utter chaos. Only one faced it up to me as a panic and confusion set in around us. My only friend and ally. Friends were forbidden while allies were expected. While our Carenthens do not want us to make friends – a destined Baker cannot be friends with a destined noble-they knew that some interaction with each other with needed for the sake of our sanities. So the concept of allies were created. Alice to be formed, and broke no hard feelings on either side. But Ander was more than ally to me; he was my friend. To everyone else, we’re the most unlikely of allies, but allies all the same. The recently, we had become more than just friends.

Last night before we went to bed, Ander had grabbed my hand and pulled me out from where I was hidden in the back out of the room, unnoticed by the young Carenthen who was distracted momentarily. This was one of the reasons why we were such unlikely allies; I stayed in the back while Ander wasn’t afraid to speak up. He led me to our usual spot where we usually spent time together in secret; the attic. Or so we assumed it was the attic. When the trap door was closed behind us, Ander shocked me when he kissed me hard on lips like it would be the last time. “We’ll get together, forever Sarasi.” He whispered into my ear before leading me further into the semi dusty room. As much as we wanted to clean it up a bit, we didn’t dare chance someone might notice. We stared at the stars that twinkled through a hole in the roof Ander made last year. We decided it was time for us to go back, Ander walked me to my room. Kissing me sweetly, he swiftly left for his own room. I barely managed to shut the door to my room when I heard the distinctive sound of Carenthen Greta’s shoes on the hall floor. I leaned against the door, but still focused on Ander. Now I could see why they banned such emotions; they tore you apart.

Ander’s face was one of complete and utter shock. The fear flashed in his eyes before he managed to hide it. Instead he tried to give me a break smile. But it was weak and did nothing for me. If Ander was scared, and then I was truly scared, for Ander was the bravest person I knew… Or possibly the stupidest.

“Silence!” The Pyemin’s yell echoed through the hall. The yells turned whispers, whispers slowly hushed to silence. Every eye was turned towards us. “I shall look once more.” She commanded, or hand held up stop the protests that were sure to come. Once again, she reached her head towards me. I met her eyes before her fingers brushed my forehead. We both knew there was no changing what she’d seen as my future.

A slid down my face, a lone signal of my distress. The Pyemin sympathized and cried silently with me. Yet, when she touched my face for the third time, I felt numb. It felt like a horrible nightmare with no way of ever waking up escaping. My destiny was set, no way of changing it.

Woman stepped forward to address the whispering crowd once more. “It was meant to be. Once a fluke, twice a coincidence, but three times is destiny. This girl shall forever be… Untouchable.” Her voice cracked on the word untouchable. I, Sarasi, was to the first female Untouchable in history. In our society we were not allowed to do many things. Everyone had their place in society. There is no improving your place. It was this way to make the separation between the classes is even more pronounced. But there was one less class that went unspoken of and unnoticed. No one wants them. The society need them. Society would crumble and fall of them. They were the tanners, corners, but, mainly priests of death. In a society that have deaf the very important light, the irony of it all was that they were considered dirtier and lower than dirt. Only men long to this cult of the class. And only one of five hundred were destined to this hard and hated life. The Untouchables were exiled eons ago, outside of the city walls where they would not foul anyone of higher status.

They were the Untouchables.

Ander’s warm brown eyes were the last thing I saw as I was ripped from the stage and shoved though a side door.
