I woke up to soft, warm lips trailing up my arm igniting the path as they passed.

"Happy Birthday, love."

My sleep induced fog shimmered at hearing the greetings.

My lips curled into an involuntary smile and I replied in a gruff tone,
"Thanks. Why are you up at four in the morning? "

I asked after stealing a glimpse at the digital clock on the nightstand.

Jason smiled and said, "Its my girlfriend's birthday today and I have a surprise for you! But before that I need a good morning kiss."

Morning breath was something we had overcome a long time ago.

I tilted my head upwards and captured his lips in a fiery embrace.

"Mhmmm...."

A loud ringing resounded around me distracting me from the current activities.

"Jason?"

"Hmm..." He uttered while still kissing me.

"Jason...do you hear something? Like bells?"

"It us, baby. Our-"

His words were interrupted by the enlightenment of the metaphorical light bulb in my head and I pushed him aside, running downstairs towards the kitchen taking two steps at a time.

"Its the smoke alarm, you doofus!"

Hasty steps rushed beside me and went directly through the smoke,

"Its the cake!" which was followed by a number of curses.

Jason stepped out of the smoke holding a crisp black, burnt and something that looked like a heart-shaped cake and uttered through a manly pout,

"Surprise. Happy Birthday."

To both of our surprise, I started laughing. Uncontrollably.

After a few seconds, a small smile could be detected on Jason's face. He pulled me close and softy remarked,

"Its actually your fault..."

"Uhuh..."

"Yeah...I got so distracted kissing you that I thought those bells were like....you know..."

"Like?"

"Like....like those you sparks you read in clichè books of yours.....I am a complete moron!"

"You are a functional moron at best. But I love you anyways."

Que a long makeout session after which we proceeded to get some real, non-black birthday cupcakes from a bakery nearby. Cupcakes that had no chance of being inedible, not that I will ever admit it!

A/N: This was supposed to be my contest entry for ChickLit word prompt but due to some technical error,  it couldn't be posted....so here it is now.
