Ty Blackthorn paced back and forth nervously, tugging on the cords of his headphones. Today was the day he and Kit met the young Shadowhunter they would be adopting. Kit Herondale sat on a dark grey armchair, foot tapping in anticipation. Both boys were extremely anxious at the thought of adopting, but at 25 years-of-age, and the accumulation of everything they had been through together they both knew they were ready.
When Kit brought up the idea of adopting a child Ty had been ecstatic. Watching Kit and Mina made him realise what a great father Kit would be, and his heart would flutter with love at the thought of he and Kit raising a child of their own. They knew it wouldn't be easy. Kit had seen first hand the difficulties and struggles that came from raising a child. The first time they walk, talk, the terror of their first cold. All would be memorable times for them both. When Ty and Kit had gone to Alec and Magnus asking for their advice on the matter, the two men were supportive and enthusiastic about helping the boys in any way they could. A month after discussing the process with Alec, Ty and Kit had received a call about a young girl who needed a family.
The young Shadowhunter named Laura who Kit and Ty were adopting had been born to two young parents, Adeline and Morgan. Adeline had been killed in battle and Morgan had relinquished care of his daughter. He felt he was too young to raise her on his own. Their daughter was only 8 months old, and Kit and Ty had been discussing the possibility of renaming her.
Ty sat anxiously beside Kit, taking his hand. The other boy's palms were sweaty, and he could see how tense he was.
"What if she doesn't like me?" Kit mumbled, eyes locked with the ground.
Ty was taken aback by his boyfriend's words. "Why would she not like you?"
Kit shrugged. "I don't know. What if I mess this whole thing up?"
He watched Kit's Adam's apple bob up and down as he swallowed hard. "How could you possibly mess this up?" Ty asked, placing a finger under Kit's chin and raising his face to meet his.
Kit's blue eyes were filled with tears threatening to spill at any moment. "What if I'm like my dad?" His voice was choked and almost child-like.
Ty sighed, running his hand along Kit's cheek, watching Kit's eyes close upon his touch. He placed a gentle kiss on his lips and pulled away. Kit's eyes fluttered open, a single tear spilling down his cheek.
"You won't be," Ty said firmly. "I've seen you with Mina. The love and affection you show her is true and deep."
"But my father didn't love me and I was his son-"
"You're not your father, Christopher." Ty's voice was sharp, yet caring. Kit may have been born with the last name Rook, but Ty had seen him grow into a brave young Shadowhunter worthy of the name Herondale.
Kit's breath hitched in his throat. He sniffed back a tear before wiping his eyes. He lifted his chin and squared his shoulders. "You're right," he said. "I'm not my father."
Ty chuckled at his boyfriend's demeanor. The lifted chin, the squared shoulder, and determined eyes were all things he loved about his boyfriend.
Ty mumbled an 'I love you', before kissing Kit. Their lips met with the same passion that had been there the first time they had admitted their love for one another. Every kiss from that point on had been soft, but hungry to absorb the sparks that flew between them.
The soft noise of Alec Lightwood's office doors opening alerted the two boys to stop kissing, and they turned to face their Consul. Alec Lightwood stood with a soft smile on his face as he regarded the two Shadowhunters in front of him. His parabatai, Jace Lightwood, stood beside him, hands folded in front of him and steady eyes meeting Kit's. Kit had asked Jace to be there when he met his daughter for the first time. He and Jace had become close over the years, and he was always there whenever he needed anything. When Kit had asked Jace to be there, he cried. Although he had told Kit never to tell anyone that. He had told Kit how proud he was that the Herondale name would be continued with him, and they had shared a long embrace. Tessa was inside with Jem, holding the baby as they had traveled to Idris to collect her. Jem and Tessa were Kit's family, and he felt it was important to share this moment with them.
