Not A Phase

     Once we got back to the Matthews' place, the gang was joking around like we used to. Maybe we didn't need Darry after all. God dammit. Of course we needed him. He's basically the whole gang's dad, seeing as their own dads aren't worth shit. Two-Bit's dad left him and his mom and sister. Dally's dad stopped giving a hang about him at the age of 10. Steve's dad throws him out every week. And Johnny's dad is in the cooler for beating him.

Darry though, I thought he was different. I know I always complain about him nagging me about stuff, but at least I know he cared. Now though, I don't think he'd care if he found me dead in the lot.

I had to keep all this in though. I don't need the gang to pity me more than they already do. The only person I can really trust to understand me is Johnny.  He's always there after an argument  with Darry to cool me down. Just like I'm always there for him after his dad beats the tar outta him. I think that's why we make the perfect couple. We understand each other better than anyone else.

Maybe that's what I need, to talk to Johnny. I know he'll listen.

"Hey Johnnycakes, wanna go to the lot?" I asked Johnny quietly. He simply nodded and smiled. I told Soda where I was going, and we left.

When we got to the lot, me and Johnny made a small fire and cuddled up in those old car seats.   I laid my head on Johnny's shoulder, and that's when I lost it. I started bawling into my boyfriend's shoulder. Johnny was starting to tear up himself.

When we both calmed down, Johnny let me vent.

"Why can't he just accept us? I know we fight a lot, but I thought he loved us!" I choke out, still crying.

"It's gonna be alright Ponyboy, we're gonna be okay. Even if Darry doesn't accept us, we still got the rest of the gang, and they ain't goin' nowhere" Johnny said calmly. I appreciated him, but I couldn't say it with words. Instead, I placed a soft kiss on his lips. He gladly kissed back.

"Alright, lets go back." I say. I didn't really want to go back, but Soda would get worried, and it was getting kinda cold. We both stood up , and headed back to the Matthews' house.

When we walked inside, I could tell something was off. The usually loud house was really quiet. Johnny noticed it too. We looked at each other, puzzled. I shrugged and walked into the living room. There, I was greeted by none other, than Darrel Curtis. And boy, did he look angry.

"Come sit boys" Darry said, his voice cold. I grabbed Johnny's hand, and walked to the couch. Darry glared at our locked fingers, but I wasn't gonna let go if my life depended on it.

Soda and Steve we're sitting on the floor, with their hands also holding. Two-Bit and Dally we're sitting by each other on the floor next to them.

"I'm sorry guys." Darry said, looking from me to Soda. What?! Did I hear him right? Did he just say sorry?! Something was up. But I didn't know what.

My question was answered pretty fast though.

"I'm sorry for throwing you out. I know you're just confused, and this phase isn't helping much." Darry said with a look of sadness on his face. Steve lost it.

"This is not a phase!" Steve yelled.

"SHUT UP FAGGOT!" Darry screamed at him. Everyone was too shocked to react. Darry was quick to continue. He glared at Steve, then at Johnny.

"You two think you can just take advantage of my brothers' phase?! Well, not anymore. Soda, Pony, get your things we're leaving." Darry said with his toughest voice. Everyone sat still. That's when Soda snapped out of it.

"No." Said Soda simply.

"Excuse me?" Darry yelled.

"We're not leaving. I dunno about Pony, but I'm in love. You think you can just take that from me?" Soda said, tears in his eyes. I know I'm in love with Johnny. But I was too close to tears that I couldn't say anything. Instead I turned to Johnny and kissed him.

"How many times do I gotta tell ya?! You guys are still kids, you don't even know what love is! It's. Just. A. Phase." Darry said, getting increasingly angrier.

"No! It's not a phase! Darry, I've seen love before, and these guys have it. If you can't see that, I don't think you're good enough to take care of em." Two-Bit suddenly screamed. Darry snickered.

"Oh ya? Where have you seen love before Two-Bit?" Darry said mockingly.

"With your parents." Two-Bit said. That made everyone shut up real quick.
