Running

Just like that,

I ran out--

riiiiiiiiing.

I threw my worker's cap

on the ground.

And left.

I abandoned the car

I'd taken to work.

Something I only realized

when the sound died down

for just a moment.

I thought about going back.

I paused and tur---

riiiiiiiiiiing.

Vision clouded,

Knees wobbly,

I ran.

To a house--

a car was parked,

I couldn't tell whose--

where the door was open.

I went in, and up the stairs,

frantically, dumping things in a bag.

I wasn't sure what,

Just stuff--

riiiiiiiiiiiiing.

Sounds

Through my tears

I didn't hear when the ringing died.

A small calm,

before another storm.

But--

I still heard

something.

I paused, holding still,

listening.

The sound wasn't near,

too faint,

too distant.

So I stood, and tailed the noise

all the way

To my parents' bedroom.

Motherhood

There I saw it,

her filthy brown hair

draped over his face.

Unrecognizable blonde hair

poking through from under her.

As she lay on my dad's side

of their bed.

Passionately doing

what I'd hoped

to never even imagine--

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

Gasping for air,

I stumbled back

and bumped into the doorframe.

She twitched, and went still.

Robotically, she turned to me,

still on top of him,

staring at me.
