I could hear him pacing right outside my door, a growl leaking through the cracks every few minutes. His presence made me nervous, though safe. Nevertheless, I was glad I got some privacy to process this new shift in my life.

He was the alpha's son, Axle. He was intimidating, strong, hot-headed, and a threat. My information about him has always been followed by a "stay away". How cynically ironic that now he's my mate. My breathing hitched at the thought, but I quickly took a deep breath as to not restart the unideal process of my now functioning lungs.

Fifteen minutes passed too fast, and in barged the doctor. I jumped, startled, and behind him was my brooding mate. I tried to not let my mind delve into the depths of thought of how attractive he was or how I could possibly be worthy to be his mate. The doctor took the nebulizer and relistened to my lungs, me trying to avoid eye contact with the fuming man in front of me. He growled lowly as the doctor touched me but made no movements as he knew this was necessary.

"There you go! Nice happy lungs!" the doctor chirped. I grumbled a thank you as he left the room, uncomfortable to be alone with my mate again.

He stood there in silence for what seemed minutes, hours even, but was only seconds. My gaze darted around the room aimlessly and frantically. He growled as I didn't return his glare which bore into my face. Finally, unable to keep still due to my pounding heart and shaking body, I swung my legs to the other side of the paper-lined bed to get up.

"Well, I-" I started, but was interrupted by his large hand grabbing the back of my neck. I froze as he swept me up in the same position he carried me to the pack house in. This time, though, I was hyperaware of everything: the way his body slightly shook in anger, his heavy breathing, the heat between our skin, my tense muscles.

We reached what I assumed was his bedroom too quickly, and he hesitated on how to open the door without putting me down. I reached down and twisted the knob, to which he looked down appreciatively and kicked the door open. He then slammed it shut with his body, not bothering to turn on the light. I was scared of the dark, but I felt secure and warm with him.

He dropped (yes, dropped) me on the bed as I let out as much of a scream as I could in the foot-long drop. He hissed in annoyance as he walked to the other side, turning on the lamp. I flinched at the sudden brightness. He sat on the bed and glared at me for a few seconds as I shamefully lowered my head and glanced at him through my eyelashes like a puppy being scolded.

"Who are you? I've never seen you," he started with a hidden growl under his words. I fiddled with the black cotton sheets. What should I say? I wasn't supposed to tell anybody my secret, especially the alpha's son! But he is my mate, someone I can trust and tell everything to. Then again, I have heard horror stories of mates rejecting their other half. What if he did that? His personality seems to lead me down that train of thought. A loud growl ripped me from my thoughts and snapped my gaze to him. Suddenly, my instinct to appease my mate took over which mixed with my inability to lie.

"I-I," I started, sweating as my eyes cast downward to hide the welling tears. I took a deep breath to steady my voice. "My name is Doe," I said with a slow and soft voice like I had to mull over them to get them out of my mouth, my eyes hesitantly meeting his. His gaze told me he was not satisfied with this answer, so I continued. "My parents are Elizabeth and Thomas Brooks," he nodded in recognition of the names.

"I didn't know they had a daughter," he wondered aloud, furrowing his brow.

I let out a nervous chuckle, my pale fingers twisting and pulling hard at his sheets in discomfort. "Well, they aren't my biological parents, and I'm kind of a secret." The confused look on his face pushed me for more answers but I was reluctant to give them.
