With Barley's revelation of Paxiss' role as princess and loathed fire monster of the kingdom of Black Tree, the two of them went to work. Realizing the control she has been subjected to, Paxiss makes quick progress in learning how to take charge of her abilities. She also starts to notice things around the palace that she hadn't paid enough attention to before. Meanwhile, Barley finally discovered the second beast roaming the land, a horrific beetle monster with poisonous vapor breath that is eating the paleotus mushrooms that the people of the kingdom grow as tribute. Paxiss locates a connection to the mushrooms and the king in a fungus she finds covering Farrens secret underground throne room. Barley takes the investigation to the field and discovers a secret that the two can use to finally confront this twisted mystery, once and for all.
