"Wait!" Bucky yelled. "Don't shoot!" A collective groan sounded from the rest of the team, filling up Bucky's earpiece. They had spent weeks tracking down the deadly assassin known as Y/N Y/L/N, and now they had her right where they wanted her, in the perfect position to kill her and put an end to the string of deaths she left behind wherever she went.
"You better make this good, Bucky," Steve said tiredly.
"This isn't her," Bucky said.
"What do you mean, it's not her?" Natasha snapped. "We've spent weeks carefully tracking her every move. I'm pretty sure we have the right girl."
Bucky shook his head, talking quickly. "No, I mean, it's her body, but she's not controlling her actions. She's being brainwashed - you can see it in her eyes. They're all cloudy and her pupils are dilated. We can't shoot her; she's innocent." Steve squinted to get a better look at the girl. "Bucky's right," he confirmed. "This poor girl is being brainwashed. We can't shoot her. But we can't just let her go, either - we need to know who she's working for. Nat, hit her with a tranquilizer and bring her back to the compound. We'll see if Wanda or Tony can help us out."
Natasha nodded, already moving towards the girl. "On it."

(Your POV, five days later)
You woke up to a soft white light and a pounding headache. You tried to sit up to get a sense of your surroundings, but you were strapped to what seemed like a hospital bed, effectively keeping you from moving anything what your head.
"Oh good, you're up." A soft voice startled you from your thoughts.
You whipped your head around to see a tall, dark haired man with a metal arm making his way toward you. "Who the hell are you?" you spat, automatically turning defensive. "Where am I? Why am I tied up?"
The strange man held up a hand and sat in a nearby chair, just close enough to comfortably talk but still give you space. "One question at a time," he said. "My name is Bucky Barnes. We're in the Avengers Compound. We have reason to believe that you've been brainwashed for a few months now and have killed hundreds of people. We want to help you, Y/N."

You shook your head, trying to recall the past couple months, but your memory was foggy. "That... that can't be right," you said slowly. "I don't... I didn't... How the hell do you know my name?"
Bucky gave you a sympathetic smile. "Trust me," he said, "I know what you're feeling. I've gone through the exact same thing many years ago. If you cooperate with me, I can help you recover your memories, but your life will never be the same after this. We might even be able to find out who did this to you. Y/N, please let me help you."
The earnestness in his voice was enough to convince you that Bucky wasn't your enemy. "Okay," you relented. "But please untie me. My arms hurt."

A few weeks later, you still weren't able to recover the memories leading up to you being brainwashed, but you had started making new memories in their place. It took a few days to gain the Avengers' trust, but when you did, you found yourself welcomed as one of them. You enjoyed hanging out with Bucky in particular, and before you knew it, you found yourself looking forward to being with him, until your crush was undeniable. You ignored your feelings, however, not trusting yourself after having been brainwashed for months. Bucky, on the other hand, made no attempt to hide his feelings for you, expressing on multiple occasions that he was falling for you.
One day, you were in the lab, trying again to spark some sort of memory of your brainwashing. You were hooked up to a machine Tony had built that would monitor your reactions to different things, but you couldn't concentrate with Bucky there. "Bucky," you said, catching his attention. "Could you please leave? You're distracting me."
Bucky smirked. "I know you like me, doll," he said, making you blush.
You shook your head. "No."
The smile slid off of Bucky's face as he realized you were serious. He took your hand and gave you a pleading look. "I like you, Y/N. I really, really like you. And I know you like me too. So why are you denying this spark between us?"

"Because I'm scared," you blurted. "Not of you, but of how much I like you. Whenever you walk into the room, I swear my heart beats ten times faster. You make me feel things I haven't felt in a long time. And that scares the hell out of me."
Bucky squeezed your hand. "Y/N," he said, "Do you trust me?"
"Yes," you said. You were surprised by how easily the words fell out of your mouth, and you found yourself realizing that yes, you really did trust Bucky. "Then will you trust me when I say I would never hurt you?" Bucky asked seriously. "I want a relationship with you, Y/N. I want long walks on the beach and stolen kisses when nobody is looking. I want it all, but I want you to want it too."
Tears pricked the corners of your eyes as you nodded and whispered, "I want it too."
