liquid gold dripping off fingertips,
emerald eyes full of shattered glass,
ruby drops of crystalline blood

i tremble with the faeries harmonious violins
and the opera of their saccharine voices
singing and whispering in my ear;

[ don't eat the food, don't drink the wine,

bleeding green veins on wilted trees,
screams of tortured, wingless birds,

the violins screech into pounding drums,
the singing and whispering rises to gory jeers,
the forest fills with hysterical laughter and
lustful, savage roars

[ please, i cry, m e r c y ]

but my fingers fill with clay,
my skin melts to pale viridescent,
my legs turn to thick, splintering oak,
and my eyes swirl to pearly white

[ you tasted magic, they sneered,
and you must pay the p r i c e ]

i claw my throat as sweet air leaves
and my bones break and crunch into ivy limbs
my crimson heartbeat flutters and slows,
and my scream chokes and dies,
and suddenly, t h e n -

[ pay the price, they sang,
pay the price with your
