King Hedrick considered himself to be a just king, someone who delivered what would be fair and right to his subjects. Of course, looking at his pensive gardener, Hedrick found this sorely tested. Well, kings should be given a bit of leeway for some flaws, right? He was only human after all. Royal, yes but still very human...and angry. Settling down his cutlery with a soft 'clink', the king addressed the gardener, "You mean to say...that we are one less apple from yesterday?"

"Yes, your majesty." Ryker responded with trepidation, keeping his head bowed and his frame tense and ready to flee.

"Thirty-one, you say?" Though it sounded less like a question and more of a...

"Yes, your majesty." The gardener answered meekly once more. The king leaned back on his chair, his frame deceptively slack. Ryker would have allowed himself to release some tension were it not for the displeased frown slowly but surely forming on the king's weathered face. 'This is it.' Ryker thought to himself hysterically. 'This is how I die.'

"Ryker, my dear old friend," The royal gardener tensed further

"Ryker, my dear old friend," The royal gardener tensed further. "You mean to say you have lost one of my apples?" King Hedrick sounded calm but Ryker knew better, or well, worse and this was approaching 'worse' rapidly.

"No!" He winced. "I mean, yes sir. A-actually it just disa-appeared." Sending fervent prayers and comforting himself with the knowledge that his children were safe at least, he belatedly added, "...Your majesty."
