There was a country

There was a country

An envisioned civilized government

Bursting with juicy promises

Truthful and incorruptible leaders

And lifelong peace.

But that country was a lost cub

In the midst of a vast savannah

Fighting to stamp her mark

In a grassland filled with bigger and ferocious animals.

Finally, the moment arrived

Led by her general

She marched forward

In an attempt to free herself

From the clutches of the wild

But the wild wasn't ready to let go of her.

Breakfast came with the sound of bullets

Whizzing by the ears of many

Narrowly missing the hearts of the masses

The country pulsed with fear, anger and hatred

For the beasts of the wild wouldn't set her free.

Dragons circled the land

Hurling fireballs at the scared populace

People scampered around like rabbits

Looking for safety and the comfort of home

Blood drained into the rivers

The once clear waters

Transformed into a raging pool of gore.

Little ones clutched the hems of their mothers' wrappers

Thumbs in their mouths, hunger clawing at their swollen bellies

Heads the weight of watermelons; legs the size of twigs

Tears streaming down their sunken cheeks,

They wailed for their fathers

Who had been enlisted for the battle.

Food was scarce

Roads were blocked

Starvation grinned at the populace

Death laughed in their faces

Water shrunk away from them.

The only constant thing at that point

Was the never ending sound of gunshots

And the heart wrenching screams of women and children.

One year passed

Two years gone

Three years went by

She was out-numbered and helpless

She surrendered

Couldn't take it no more

Thousands had lost their lives

Fathers never returned from the war

Mothers never saw their babies again

Children became orphans.

The fight for a country came to an end

But the name of that country is in every mouth

That struggle for a country will never be forgotten

The blood of strangers and indigenes still fill the land

Deep in the eastern heartlands, the war will always be remembered

The boom of cannons still hang in the air

There was a country

And it was called Biafra.
