'Can I lay by your side, next to you, to you
And make sure you're alright
I'll take care of you,
And I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight'

- Lay Me Down by Sam Smith

When I've mentioned that I really didn't think things through when I agreed for Tom to stay the night, I meant it.

It seems like I had forgotten to use my brain to think about the promise that I had made to Aunt Jenna.

So my brain didn't start working until I walked into my house with Tom following behind me. Aunt Jenna stopped midway as she stared at me with a 'what the fuck' look.

"Hey Aunt Jenna, can I talk to you real quick?"

I gave her a nervous smile as I hoped she wouldn't say something she wasn't supposed to.

Aunt Jenna narrowed her eyes at me as she motioned with her head to follow her into the kitchen. Giving Tom a tight smile, I turned around and followed behind Aunt Jenna.

"Hope you promised"

"I know and I'm really sorry but Tom says he needs a place to stay"

Aunt Jenna threw her hands in the air like I said the most stupid thing, "He literally lives next door Hope. I'm sure he can stay there".

I glanced over to where Tom was still standing. Looking back to Aunt Jenna I gave her a defeated look, "We both have heard how bad he has it at home. Please Aunt Jenna, can he just stay for tonight and I swear it'll be the last time".

Aunt Jenna glanced over to Tom. She kissed her teeth as she looked back to me.

"Only for tonight Hope but this better not repeat, you hear me?".

I gave her a nod. Aunt Jenna let out a sigh as she checked the time on her watch, "I better get going my shift at the hospital starts soon. Now I left you dinner in the fridge and you can tell your friend he can stay in the guest room. I don't want no funny business Hope".

"Thank you Aunt Jenna, I swear I'll repay you".

Aunt Jenna gave me a smirk, "You owe me a movie and ice cream this weekend".

I gave her a smile, "Drive safe, love you Aunt Jenna".

After Aunt Jenna had left to work I was left standing in the living room with Tom.

There was a moment of awkward silence between us as he pretended that the wall was the most interesting thing. It wasn't until I realized what wall he was staring at that I knew why he was staring at it with curiosity.

Without saying much, I made my way over to stand next to him as he stared at a picture of a family.

"I was ten or eleven, I really can't remember but that day Dad took my mom and I for an ice cream date. He said we were celebrating but I wasn't sure exactly what for".

I kept my gaze on the picture before I looked over to Tom and gave him a polite smile, "Would you like to eat some dinner?".

Tom gave me a silent nod and followed me when I motioned towards the kitchen. As he took a seat, I headed over to the fridge. Opening it I took out the plastic container that had spaghetti and meatballs.

Removing the lid from the container, I placed it inside the microwave.

"It's only your aunt and you?"

I turned around to face Tom. He was staring at me with a look I wasn't so sure of what it meant.

Giving him a nod as I went ahead to grab plates from the cupboard, "Yeah, my parents passed away when I was twelve".

"I'm sorry"

"Oh no it's okay, really. Aunt Jenna said that it's never good to let grief consume you, so I managed to get over their deaths. I mean it's not like I forgot them or anything but I think I've gotten use to them not being here".

Once I had served us both dinner, I grabbed both of the plates and walked over to the table.

Placing a dish infront of Tom, I handed him a fork and a cup of juice before I took a seat across from him.

We both ate in silence and I didn't miss the occasional glances that he would give me.

He's literally sitting infront of you Hope.

I kept my gaze on my food until I couldn't handle his eyes on me. Looking up to him, I could see that he wanted to say something but he wasn't sure if he should say it.

Tom stayed quiet as he removed his gaze from me before he cleared his throat.

"Do you...do you miss them?"

I watched him as he began to awkwardly play with his food.

"Yeah. I miss them all the time you know? There's times where I could feel their presence. It's sounds absurd, I know but sometimes I can feel them whenever I'm sad. Aunt Jenna says that they will always be with me even if they are not their physically".

Tom stayed quiet as he nodded. I knew exactly why he asked me that question.

"Do you miss your mom?"

I instantly regret asking that when I watched Tom tense up and clench his fist. The same dark look that he always carried spread across his face.

He had his jaw clench as he slowly pushed himself away from the table. Without sparing me a glance he spoke up.

"Can you show me where I can sleep?"

I knew that I had hit a nerve when I brought his mother up. After all, his mother's death wasn't something he took well.

Deciding that it'd be best for him to be alone, I stood up from the table and led him down the hall to the only empty room available.

Opening the door to the bedroom I motioned for him to walk in, "The restroom is across the hall and I think I might have some clothes for you to sleep in".

Not letting him protest, I walked out of the bedroom and went down to mine. After I had grabbed some clothes for Tom, I went back to the room.

"These will probably fit you".

Tom grabbed the sweatpants and t-shirt from me. He didn't say anything as he looked down to the men clothing until realization hit him.

He looked up to me with wide eyes as he realized I handed him so of my father's clothes.

Ignoring the look he was giving me, I gave him a smile instead, "They're the only clothes I have available unless you want to wear some hello kitty pajama pants".

A faint smile tugged at the edge of his lips before he gave me a nod to thank me, "I..thank you again for letting me stay".

I smiled at him, "Goodnight Tom"

"Goodnight Hope".
