"Why do you look like you're about to fight that notebook?"A small yelp left my lips as I flinched. I looked up from my notebook to see Tom take a seat across from me.
"You really have to stop doing that, give me like a five second warning before you appear randomly".
There was a small smile on the edge of his lips as he looked at me, "So what are you doing?".
I glance down to my notebook to see the scribbles of ideas that I had been trying to come up with for the past ten minutes.
The school carnival was coming soon and I was giving the duty to find a theme. When Mr. Fern had told me he wanted me to be in charge of this year's carnival theme, I had gone full into panic mode.
To begin with, I hadn't gone to the cardinal since my freshman year and the responsibility of having to choose the theme was too much for me.
"I am trying to come up with some ideas for this year's school carnival. I don't even know why Mr. Fern thought it was a good idea to choose me".
Looking back up from my notebook, I saw a look of confusion on Tom's face.
"There's a school carnival?"
I had my mouth wide open from shock before I dropped my pencil ontop of my notebook, "Tom, we've been going to this school for almost four years now, how did you not know that the school did an annual carnival?".
Tom simply shrugged his shoulders as he bit into his apple. I simply kept looking at him with a dumbfounded look before I clapped my hands together.
"Okay that's it, I'm taking you to the carnival".
I didn't realize what I said until Tom stopped mid bite to stare at me with wide eyes. Tom was quick to shake his head as he placed his apple on his trait, "Nope, I won't go at all. It sounds stupid and I hate being around people from school".
Without saying another word I simply nodded my head before I look down to my notebook. I kept my gaze there as I tried to think of a theme.
A small gasp left my lips as I looked up to Tom, "Oh, I got it! How about a Halloween theme?"
Tom stared at me with 'are you serious' look, "Hope, it's literally the middle of spring".
I stared at him for a moment as realization kicked in, "You're right, this is harder than I imagined it would be".

"Lexie, you are an angel sent from god"There was a goofy smile on her face as rolled her eyes.
"Whatever Hope, now get home before it becomes too late and please be careful okay?".
I gave her a smile as I grabbed the pepper spray from inside my backpack and held it up for her to see, "I'll be safe, see you Lexie".
Putting the pepper spray away, I threw my backpack over my shoulder and walked out of McDonald's. Today had been one of my short shifts and I was lucky enough that there was still enough sunlight for me to get home.
"Hope, can I walk with you?"
A scream left my lips as I turned around to see Tom standing there with his hands in his pockets.
"What did I say about the five second head start?".
I had my hand against my chest as I felt how fast my heart was beating. Tom simply gave me a small smile as he motioned with his head for me to walk beside him.
"How was work?"
I watched through the corner of my eye as Tom gave me a glance before he looked ahead of him.
"It was good, just the usual you know. The occasional customers yelling at me because the ice cream machine isn't working but besides that, it's pretty normal".
A soft chuckle left his lips and his shoulders sjook lightly, "So it's true then, about the machine never working?".
I nodded my head as I glanced ahead of me. The sun was starting to set and the cool breeze of the night started to settle in.
We had about fifteen minutes left before we would arrive back home and we had fallen into the same comfortable silence I was always used to.
Tom either had his gaze ahead of him or he would occasionally glance over to me. His hands were in the pocket of his grey hoodie and I was sure that he wanted to say something.
He always wanted to say something. No matter how hard he tried to pretend like he was just quiet, I could see that his thoughts were all over the place.
As soon as we turned the corner of our street, I noticed how Tom slowed down his steps.
"Outer space"
I turn my head to look at him, "What?"
"Outer space. The theme for the carnival could be outer space".
I felt a grin spread across my face as I stared at him, "Tom that is such a good idea! Why couldn't I have thought of that?".
Tom simply shrugged his shoulders as he slowed down his steps until we stood outside of my house.
I held onto the straps of my backpack as I glance from my house then back to him, "Thank you for walking me home".
Tom gave me a nod as he brought his hand to scratch the back of his neck. I stood there for a moment as I looked at him before I pointed to my house, "Well I better start heading in, if you need me just give me a call or come and knock on my door".
I was about to turn around when Tom stopped me by grabbing my arm. Looking back to him, I could see a nervous look on his face.
He slowly let go of my arm and placed his hands back inside the pocket of his jeans, "I'll go with you to the carnival if you still want me to go".
"Wait, you're willing to go with me?"
Tom gave me a nod making me smile. Before I knew it, I had already stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him.
I had seemed to stun him as he simply stood there with his hands on his side. I didn't let him react as I was quick to pull away and give him a shy grin.
"Sorry, I just got excited. But thank you for wanting to go with me Tom".
A small smile formed on his lips as he stared at me, "You're welcome Hope".
