I Don't Know

It's been weeks since I've been on the road. Quite frankly, I'm not sure how I haven't been caught yet.

I didn't do anything fancy, no disguises, no escape plan. I just ran.

Right now, I'm running through a neighborhood of who knows where.

A boy riding a bike is pedaling slowly behind me. He's been following me for a while now. Curious, maybe.

"Why have we all been taking the exact same turns?" He asks.

"I don't know."

"Let me guess, you're going to turn that way, too?"

"I don't know. Maybe."

I turn that way. The boy follows.

"Where are you going?"

"I don't know. Just following the path."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Exercise?"

"Sure."

"Do you live around here?"

"Not exactly."

I continue running. He pedals behind in silence.

"Well, I'm going to go home now. Do you know where you're going?"

"No. Figure it out as I go, I guess."

"Ok."

Well, that was nice. Didn't know how confused and clueless I was until he talked to me.

I keep running.

All I see is road, more road, the pounding of my feet on the pavement. My breathing, how tired I am, how far I've gone... it all doesn't matter. I just keep running.

And eventually, I stop.

I look up.

I'm in the woods. Not sure how I got here.

In front of me is a tall, stone brick mansion, covered in vegetation. The building is very old, as the outside has not been maintained at all, overgrown with weeds and brush. However, someone clearly lives here, as the front porch light is on.

And that is when I realize how hungry and tired I am.

I collapse to the ground. Darkness slowly fills my vision. A girl is seen coming out the front door and towards me. Then, light and sky.
